If I go for 27" monitor would I need a 7950? then would I need a new PSU?

    Hey guys,

As with many people I'm tempted to try my luck at one of those korean 27" monitors. The Shimian/Catleap etc etc can be had for around 200 notes delivered! But a few concerns have come about since considering one. It doesn't seem to be as simple as getting a new monitor...

With such a high-res monitor, am I right in thinking it'll push my 6850 to it's limits during gameplay and extensive photoshop use? I'm sure a 7950 would run it nicely but then it'll be more power hungry than the 6850... so would I then also need to upgrade my PSU to a higher rated one? (I have a 520w corsair unit I've used for the last 6years.)

Seems like a vicious circle this.

Old parts are not a problem as I could either sell them on easily enough or simply keep them for a smaller bedroom system.

Photoshop, no not at all, photoshop has started using the gpu for processing but that's totally dependent on the file size, number of layers and operation you're doing it's nothing to do with the size or res of the screen.
Yes just driving a higher res screen will require slightly more processing and ram but the numbers are still tiny
    2560x1440 at 32bit would require about 112mb of vram . . .

gaming wise you'll see a slight drop in performance, how much will depend on the game, would an upgrade be needed? depends on what you'll willing to put up with fps and quality wise.

the hx520w is 40a on the combined 12v should be fine even now

Isnt there a big risk of getting stung with customs charge and VAT? That would put it in the region of buying a DGM or similar over here.

I would agree with Pob on your needs though, maybe a better graphics card depending upon what your willing to play your games at.

Most 27" monitors are the same resolution as most 24" or 23" monitors, just with bigger pixels

Re: If I go for 27" monitor would I need a 7950? then would I need a new PSU?

Yeah it's 2560 x 1440 which is why I was wondering about a GPU upgrade too. I could run at lower res as my pc runs at 1920 x 1080 (21" LG monitor) but not sure what it'd look like stretched to 27". Gettin hit at customs is a factor but still run a saving compared to the ready imported ones by overclockers etc. Thanks Pob it's good to know I wont require a PSU change too. Any more thoughts appreciated too!
