    Syncronising different brands

I was wondering if anyone has had problems synchronising different brands of memory as I will be upgrading to 2Gb of memory this week and want to synchronise Kingston memory with an unknown brand.

I've never used unbranded RAM, but I mixed Kingston with Crucial (and later Corsair) and never had any problems.

Due to running 3 sticks of RAM in dual channel mode on the NF7S v2 (don't ask me how it did dual channel mode, it just did), I had to run at CAS3, but that was about it.

All my other systems have had 1 or 2gb in 2 sticks, so I can't say about more recent boards. If technology has progressed since my NF2 based board, then you should be fine. I'm sure Yellowbeard will have a greater insight into it though, so his response might be more informative.

Between different brands there's very little difference except for high end stuff like Dominator with new PCB's etc.

You'll need to run at the timings and speed of the slower sticks. Apart from that you should be fine.

Oh cool, I never knew that... I might upgrade to 2GB soon then

But does 4 x 512MB generally work well? I used to think having 4 sticks slowed down the timing quite a lot (on NF4 ultra platform).

(btw: does no one feel like sleeping today or something!?!!)

At one point it was very problematic running 4 sticks, but the platform is far more mature now and shouldn't have any real problems. Worst comes to worst you just RMA them under the distance sales act.

Thanks, I'll see... But if I buy some it will probably be from the forum here... and I don't think the distance sales act is in the rules here

To sycronise the memory do they have to have the same capacity ie 512Mb with 512Mb cause I am getting a 1Gb stick and want to syncronise it with a 512Mb stick.

To run dual channel, yes, they have to be the same size.
