2x4GB Corsair TWIN2X 6400C5DHX & ASUS P5B Deluxe?

Yo,

I'm planning on getting an ASUS P5B Deluxe WiFi (along with everything else for a new build) in 3 weeks time and I though I'd stick 8GB on it while prices are low. Have you by any chance verified if it'll work with two of your 4GB TWIN2X 6400C5DHX sets?

Edit: I'll add one one more question while I'm at it. I intend to get an E6600 or Q6600 and clock it up to 3GHz with the RAM at 333MHz. At that reduced frequency, what timings am I looking at? Mind you, this is for a 24/7/365 system, not a faster-than-lightning-but-will-likely-crash-and-burn-later-tonight kinda thing. With that firmly in mind, can I try for 4-4-4-12 for instance?

firstly why on earth would you need 8gb of ram?? 2gb is virtually the best amount imo, and 4 if you REALLY need it... 8gb though thats just overkill, although it might be good dependant on ur PC usage

you also gotta get 64bit OS aswell... get a better gfx card or something with the money instead rather than 8gb, or invest for tomorow

Anyway, 2GB can't possibly be the best amount when I'm at 75-80% usage constantly and wishing I had more. Best for you, by all means, but not best for me. Don't tell me what I need and I won't tell you what you need - that sound fair?

As for using 8GB, there are plenty of possibilities - you just haven't given it any thought. And yeah, I know all about the 3GB limit of 32 bit systems thanks ever so much.

Now, unless there's actually any pertinent information to shared.....

I should really just link you elsewhere, but...

Big, big, big ram disk.

Usage: copy entire game to ram disk > run from ram > experience a complete absence of lag.

Or: assign all temp folders + swap file (if you have one) to ram disk > see above.

Typically, we do not verify 2 of our memory kits at the same time in 1 board. To this point, I am not aware of any 8gb testing.

I will ask the lab to see if they plan on any of this type of testing.

That'd be great! For future reference - considering there are no disclaimers (that I've seen) against 2 x 4GB kits working in the same board, will you accept an RMA on the modules if they don't work? It won't apply to me in this case, as I've already verified that the dealer will take them back if they don't work out, but it would be handy to know.

If you mean "won't work" as in defective RAM then yes, of course we will RMA. If you purchase and your system cannot use the memory, yet the memory is not defective, you'd need to address that with your retailer.

i dont really see why it shouldnt work, unless the board wasnt made to take that much ram , now 8gb that is alot. how do you make a ramdisk out of it? special software or special hardware?

You probably found this out by now, like i did just recently when I bought a Asus P5B Deluxe board... but the 8Gb possiblity of the server can only be done on DDR2 PC5400 or DDR PC-5200 RAM (677 or 533 respectively), as the board doesnt support anything more then 4Gb total in PC-6400 RAM.

Also the above configurations will only work with specific manufacturer chips...I put 4 x 1Gb PC-6400 Rambo ram on my board, and it only detects 3Gb.... which sucks big time..... seems the board manufacturer had a marketing agreement with specific ram manufactuers.... no offense to Corsair, as I'm now looking for the required 4 x 2Gb Corsair RAM for the board to get it to 8Gb but my current problem is that ASUS dont provide the details of the supported RAM modules for 8GB.

If you have done this already Agrippa, any advice would be appreciated!

Afaik it isn't just Asus that don't support 4GB+ of PC-6400 RAM, that applies to all P965 chipset boards. The only manufacturer I've seen who don't hide the chipset limitation are MSI.

Supports up to 4GB 533/667memory size (with DDR2 800, memory only up to 4GB)

Because most people with PC2-6400 are still running 2GB it hasn't been widely exposed.

What I'm talking about is that the ASUS board, in 4Gb+ configurations only supports ram from specific manufacturers, such as Corsair, Kingston, etc. I have 4 x 1Gb Rambo brand ram, and it only recognises 3Gb... I've tested all slots and also all RAM modules to confirm no faulty parts.

Refer to section 2.4.2, on pages "2-13" onwards, specifically pages "2-15" & "2-16" which gives the QVL for the 3 types of RAM supported (DDR2-533, DDR2-677 & DDR2-800).
