CM2x1024-8500C5D and Asus Extreme
Hi mate, I have just purchased 2 x CM2x1024-8500C5D kits to give myself 4GB in an Asus Extreme, should I run these at 2.1v ?
I have seen this: Corsair Memory and Asus Striker Motherboard? So wondered are there any other settings that I should use? thanks |

Thanks mate, I have some good news and some not so good.
The CPU, MB and memory are all good. I have it running Linux; memtest shows the memory is good, I purchased 2 x CM2x1024-8500C5D as I want to run it with 4GB, but when ever I put all 4 sticks in it panics, crashes almost right away. All the settings a default except the DIMM voltage which is set to 2.00v. Are there some settings I have to set to get it to use all 4 DIMM's ? Thank you for any help. |

With 4 DIMMs you have a higher load on the chipset. Try raising your NBv to about 1.35v or 1.4v and also the FSBv to 1.4v. Make sure your NB is staying cool also.

What power supply are you using? And, in that PDF it states you need 2.2v Vdimm. Try that.

Is it stable with either pair of memory installed?
I would suggest you test all 4 DIMMs individually with Memtest (www.memtest.org) with the timings and voltage set manually to the PDF spex. You should run the test for 3-5 passes each. With Memtest, disable USB Legacy Support just for the testing as there is a conflict with this setting and Memtest. |

I put one pair in the blue slots and ran memtest for 5 passes, then moved them to the white slots, I then did the same with the other pair. Both we good.
The DIMM voltage is 2.2v, this looks a lot better. I could not find the FSBv to 1.4v setting that you mentioned earlier. If I want to run 4GB do you think the best way to do it is what I am doing now or to sell my two week old DIMMS and purchase TWIN2X4096-6400C5DHX ? would it work and would I see any difference in performance? Thanks |

2 x 2gb is more simple as you would not need to tweak the NB voltage. And, the only real difference you would see for 8500 vs 6400 if you are planning on doing some major OCing. If you can get 4 x 1gb stable, you will be fine.

Well it hangs after 15 minutes now; Am happy with the stock 3Ghz and will not be OCing my system, so I think that I will purchase the TWIN2X4096-6400C5DHX (if you are sure they will work) and sell my 2GB set on e-bay.....

Well, I would strongly suggest you fully diagnose this issue before you buy more memory. You should at a minimum try to get 1 set of the 8500 stable at 6400. That way, you can rule out other components as part of this issue. If there is some tuning or tweaking that can solve this, then you can save time and money. If there is another issue here, then the PC6400 may not solve it.

I have started to test the memory. I have run memtest for 9 hours and there were nor errors. I have put in the second pair and started memtest again. I do not expect to see any errors from my last tests. Will I have to limit it to DDR800? if so do you know what setting I should set.
Thanks |

With 4 DIMMs you should be able to run 5,5,5,15 timings at 2.2v. If you get it stable, then you can try tweaking the timings down some to about 4,4,4,12 or so.
