Lightbulb Performance DDR3 help needed (pls)

    Hiya folks...

My build so far consists of the following: QX9770, XFX nForce 790i ultra mainboard, XFX 9800GX2 XXX, WD Velociraptor (pre-ordered), Corsair HX1000W, and other bits n pieces... It now comes down to the RAM modules...

There are several questions which I am looking for clarification and suggestions on and your advice is greatly appreciated...

I am looking at putting in 2x2GB modules to give me an initial 4GB of ram. The kits I am looking at are:

    Corsair Dominator 2x2GB
    (A) TW3X4G1800C8DF - PC3-14400 - 4GB Kit - 8-8-8-24

    Corsair XMS3 2x2GB
    (B) TW3X4G1600C9DHXNV - PC3-12800 - 4GB Kit - 9-9-9-24
    (C) TWIN3X4096-1600C7DHX - PC3-12800 - 4GB Kit - 7-7-7-20

Now here comes my sticking point...

    1. I am looking to OC the RAM upto 2000MHz via EPP2.0; however only (B) mentions support for EPP, do the other modules support EPP2.0?

    2. Is there any advantage in OC-ing to 2000MHz if I go for (A), as I'm sure the latency will go up too?

    3. When will (A) be available in the UK? I can get it now from the continent for about £300, which brings it in just under £400 with any import tax.

    4. Will (A) be better value in the long run? as I understand it, I can only OC the RAM with 2 slots in use, therefore if I add a further 4GB at a later date, these will run at a stock 1600MHz?

I am kinda new to OC, so I was hoping that the EPP support the mainbaord gives me will be a gentle introduction to the arena...

    Anyway, any advice is appreciated...

    Many Thanks, Chris.

Re: Performance DDR3 help needed (pls)

With a little more reading on the subject, I'll be going for the (A) module - TW3X4G1800C8DF.

The OC to 2000MHz may be a little ambitious at this stage and somewhat beyond my confidence levels, so I'll stick to the nominal 1800MHz (8-8-8-24 @ 1.8V).

Does anyone know if this module supports the EPP2.0 offered up by nVidia?

Why do you need this EPP shizzle to overclock your RAM?

purely for ease and convienence since I've not OC'd RAM before... Thinking about it, will it be better to set the timings manually?

It's certainly not that hard to set them manually on my Abit IP35 pro motherboard. I wouldn't have thought it'd be difficult on any motherboard designed with overclocking in mind. I guess EPP (I've never seen it or used it) just makes things a bit easier still.

I guess if you can find RAM that supports EPP (or EPP v2) then that's a plus, but I really don't think it's that important in the grand scheme of things.

I think you're quite right, the module I'm looking at above does have some good specs, and seems to be head and shoulders above the competition. Support of EPP does seem to be a luxury rather than a necessity...
