Red Alert 2 won't work in Win 8

    Hi all,
I recently bought a Samsung laptop - 535U3C-A01 - running Windows 8, and was hoping that it would run old games like Red Alert 2. Unfortunately I can't get it to work. It installs, runs, and plays the cut scene intros fine, then when you get in-game the frame rate drops to unplayable, like 2-3 FPS! I don't understand why this is, I hope it isn't a spec problem, spec is:
AMD Dual Core A6-4455M processor (2.1GHz)
    6GB DDR3 RAM
    500GB SATA HDD
    Microsoft Windows 8
    Resolution 1366 x 768
AMD Radeon HD 7500G graphics card
It's running in compatibility mode XP, in the correct resolution, from an ISO file in Daemon Tools.
Any help would be much appreciated,
    Max

Re: Red Alert 2 won't work in Win 8

Id recommend that you: keep it cool, as I found out on my old laptop, after I got it cool ( cleaned out fan and made a tray cooler ) the frame rates climbed massively, gaining 20 fps in world of tanks, 12fps in arma 2 and 26fps in Minecraft. Shut down un nessesary processes, the cpu you have is also a gpu (so an apu) I believe , you can do this automaticly using a program such as gamebooster (shuts down processes then turns them back on when the game is shut). or it could just be the OS, or deomon tools in that case I recommend you search for a patch or if you downloaded it illegally the file may be damaged . old games run poor on new OS, just to say , because of the way the game is used to utilising the hardware.

    Hope it helped

I made the ISO myself, from the original disc, which I own, it's just that the laptop doesn't have an optical drive because it's too skinny. It is a legal, original file

It is not a hardware problem, the "solutions" in the post you replied to is the result of some little twerp spamming his way to 20 posts.

It seems that this os a widespread issue, however you might want to have a gander here.

    http://www.eightforums.com/gaming/16...rt-2-yuri.html (specifically post #7)

If worst comes to worst you could try going the way of the Virtual machine, and for the sake of legality using a lightweight Linux distribution w/ WINE to try and play it, and it is possible according to this - http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManage...rsion&iId=4242.

If you are prepared to wait a while I will have a go at trying to setup Red Alert 2 in a linux virtual machine and will report back.

Re: Red Alert 2 won't work in Win 8

Another option is to install an older version of Windows such as XP alongside your current operating system. I actually have a small (40GB) partition with XP solely to play a couple of old games that have issues running on Windows 7, or even on an XP virtual machine.

I would try the virtual machine approach first with Red Alert 2, since if it works it's far more convenient than having to reboot to another operating system.

Re: Red Alert 2 won't work in Win 8

Did you download the latest patch for the game? Try changing affinity to only 1 core might be worth a try I guess.

Also download http://blog.obelisk.ro/2010/09/resol...t-2-yuris.html will let you run the game in your laptops native screen resolution and the fix slowdown option on the launcher may even fix your problem too?
