I just ordered a Flightstick from CCL, which did you go for, I've decided to opt for the Thrustmaster T-flight Hotas X Joystick, which has the almost perfect balance between price and features, I'm hoping to use it with BF4 as well as I have yet to master flight in that game. (Which makes it sound like I've mastered everything else in BF4, as if, the only thing I do really well is stop bullets by standing in front of them. lol).

I went for the CCL deal too - seemed like a good price and properly supported in ED from what I've read. Plus you can split it into two parts which might come in handy given my busted up arm. Royal Mail delivery so a bit slow though - their tracking thing is rubbish. Still resisting firing it up in keyboard mode - unlearning stuff could be -odd-.

Another (slight) tangent. I found out my old Saitek Cyborg 3D stick and set it up with Elite last night. Absolutely huge positive transformation in my flight efficiency. I'm running the usual pitch/roll/yaw on X/Y and twist axis, then using the vertical and slip thrusters on the POV hat. Plenty of buttons left for extra features should they be added - was well the time spent looking for it!

I ordered a Hotas X and an X55, to see if I can justify £100 over the other. The X will arrive long before the X55 though. I like the fact the X55 has a lot more buttons tbh.

The Rhino is quite large, though, so be aware of that.
I have fairly large hands (size 10 gloves) and it's a little bit of a stretch for me.

    Re: Flightstick for Elite Dangerous

I have a X52 that I got a few years ago from when I used to play a lot of IL2. The system was very good in function and the mouse control on the throttle was a good idea but a bit fiddly to use with any real accuracy; a trackball there could be much better (the mouse was used to look around in IL2). The best part for me was the two analogue wheels on the throttle that were perfect for adjusting trim on the aircraft; probably not applicable for here. But the quality wasn't that amazing. From the start, one of the buttons flickered on the throttle and over time the Z-Axis is quite noisy now. Maybe needs a bit of a service and it'll be right as rain again. Maybe a job for the Bank Holiday weekend...

That video has actually got me a bit more interested in this, but I'm still going to wait at least until release, maybe even later depending how much free time I have.

No idea what size hand I am but I don't anticipate it being an issue

    Re: Flightstick for Elite Dangerous

Anyone know how to make the thrustmaster more responsive? I'd ideally like it it have for example the throttle maxxed out at about halfway forward - at the moment there is a bit too much movement required. Need less fine control, more responsiveness ideally.

    Re: Flightstick for Elite Dangerous

I would like to write a short bit about the X55. I have never been so disappointed with something as I have this. Firstly, just because there is a £300 joystick, it doesn't make this one "cheap", £150 on a peripheral is a significant amount of money. The first thing I noticed was how cheap it felt, I've handled better made childrens toys and this is not an exaggeration.
After the initial disappointment I decided to try the different springs, first problem is the lightest one, when fitted renders the joystick useless as it doesn't centre anymore. I refitted a few times to make sure it wasn't me but all the other springs worked. This one the joystick just stays wherever you push it. I was willing to let this slide as I found I preferred the strongest anyway. The next issue was the one that tipped me over the edge, the H2 Hat would often get stuck when clicking right, you had to nudge it back to the centre, this is unacceptable for a £150 item.
I will be RMA'ing it tomorrow with the option of a refund not replacement. I hope my Hotas X arrives soon, lack of buttons aside it cannot feel cheaper than the X55 and is priced at £120 less. Another gripe is that it's just far too light and even on the loosest throttle I found myself lifting the base up. I have pretty big hands too and some of the buttons were a stretch for me as I had already been warned but I didn't think to that degree I'd struggle. Can't really criticize it for ergonomics as we're all different sizes. A few of the buttons on the thrust felt pointless as they were far too awkward to reach.
Positives, it felt great on Elite, the multitude of buttons are fantastic, it looks cool with the LED's as well. Sadly I can't find many other for the price.

I've had a look through the control options menu and I couldn't really see anything relating to throttle sensitivity even though there were a few different throttle options there, I think it might be a case of looking for help on this through Youtube, trying the frontier forums or simply experimenting with the options.

The Thrustmaster was my second choice, I was strongly considering the X55 but after reading your comments I am glad I decided on being sensible and getting the Hotas X, I think you will be most impressed by it.

There might be a way to callibrate it in Windows - somewhere by right clicking/properties on the peripheral icon/game controllers maybe. Then when doing the calibration make sure to only move the throttle up to half way.

I had read reviews which were spot on to what I experienced but still thought I'd chance it. I'm actually baffled as to how they can charge so much for it. I think it will be hard to be disappointed for a £30 joystick with the Hotas X.

I know this is an old post but.... Guys I just found a website that's based in Liverpool that provides some good flight sticks for great price.

Sorry for not complying with rules, I pretty much came out of nowhere seeing that you wanted some sticks for Elite Dangerous.

As a buyer, I got mine form these guys; the X 55 HOTAS from saitek.

    How? Easily...
Most sticks are sub-£50 and fit in the lower band of the market; Casual gamers, flight-simmers who aren't massively rich or heavily into the games, the few people who still play old space games like Starlancer and Wing Commander.

The mid-range has tailed off, with the last decent joystick/HOTAS (in my opinion) being the Logitech G940. There just hasn't been a high demand for them, especially with no widely played space-sims.
Saitek therefore dominate the middle with the X52 range and it's Cessna desktop add-ons. Most Flight-simmers will end up getting these, unless they are insanely rich.

The X55 and X65 are therefore cheaply-made crap, which is highly-priced because it has "Gaming" features such as pritty pritty lights and fancy stickers.

The upper band is shared between the Warthog and the CH Products range. The former because it's very good and uses high-end components, the latter because they last for decades with easy maintenance and top customer service. But these do cost a bit...

'True' flight-sim enthusiasts will have either an older stick modified, one of the top two, or (if rich) a custom-built HOTAS that fits in their custom-built Sim-Pit anyway.

In short, Saitek have cornered the market on the majority of buyers, especially in advance of forthcoming space games, so can milk it heavily until either someone makes something better or until buyers realise that the £200 for CH over the original £170-ish for Saitek is actually worthwhile.
