Anyone gaming on a 4K TV ?

I'm getting close to upgrade time, and I really don't know which way to go.

I used to run a 27" 1200p monitor, and a 42" 1080p TV, and the monitor was always smoother, better for games etc. - some games suited the big screen, but generally the visual quality of the monitor made it a better experience. Then my monitor broke, so was stuck with using my TV as my sole output...and I got used to it.

So now I'm able to do a round of upgrades, I'm no longer thinking of either 1440p/144hz@27" vs 28" 4K, I'm actually wondering what big screen to get - should I upgrade this TV to a fancy one, like a high end Samsung, maybe an OLED, or should I get a 4K TV ?

I got really close to going 4K monitor, but it's just not worth it. It's too small a space for that sort of detail, and I'm really happy with big screen quality, so if I'm going to fork out silly money GPU wise, I want it to be worth it

So do any of y'all run a big screen 4K setup ? If so is it worth it over HD ? I'm thinking of 50", maybe smaller, no room for bigger.

Anyone running 1080p big screen on an OLED ?

I would wait a bit to see if there are any major differences between between quantum dot and oled.

4K looks great. Both games and 4K movie content.....but you have to contend with the hidden cost of GPU upgrades if you want to game at 4K.....

As much as I would like to go 4K myself, the entire market is so up in the air at the moment (OLED, curved, DP, HDMI 2.0a, HDR, 30/60Hz, etc etc) that it put me off......I have also been gaming at 2.5K for the last 7 years and that has taught me how expensive high-resolution gaming gets. Combine the two and then throw in the lack of 4K content and I am waiting (and as someone who hardly ever waits, that's a big thing!)

As stated, the one thing that put me off a 4K TV was lack of content. Yes there are a couple of things on Netflix and what you can find on Youtube etc but not a lot really and unless you specifically like those programmes you may be disappointed.

Quality wise, all I can say is wow, when I saw the demo you can really see that detail but maybe worth waiting a while and see which way the market is heading.

Content is a none-issue. I like 1080p movies, they do the trick just fine, it'll be a purely gaming setup.

Another issue is input lag, and 60hz TVs. On 1080p this is a lot easier as it's established, but it seems the 4K TVs with low input lag and 60hz aren't cheap.

I might just stop-gap it. I could get a really high end 1080p TV for less than 500, and get a GTX970. I'd be able to max all settings and throw in AA too. It'd last about 2 years giving 4K time to mature and new GPUs to drop

Realistically, if your paying for a 4K screen to game, you will need a SLI/CF setup.

That's what I did back in December. Still not regretting it and everything looks brilliant on a 60" screen!

I put dashes to respond to each response.

First - by turning settings down, I simply mean not turning on AA, or not having HBAO maxed. It is just insane to pay over 500 quid MORE just for a few settings.

Second - nothing to add.

Third - Yeah I think this is what I'm leaning towards. It's just SO MUCH cheaper, and at the end of the day I'm not missing out because I've not experienced 4K gaming. Also if I wait 2-3 years, both GPUs and TVs will have matured to a point where a single GPU should be plenty and TVs won't have so many different standards.

I take my PC to my mates quite often, will stay for a few weeks about once a year. He has a mid range Samsung, smaller than my cheap set (40" vs my 46") but the quality difference is astounding. Coming back home is like playing on an old washed up SDTV. So I reckon moving to a high quality 1080p screen will be a lovely leap, and I get to make another one down the line. I paid £200 for a 46" 3 years ago, so can't complain.

I'm still really tempted to get a 4K G-SYNC, or a 144hz 1440p screen, I get suckered by the reviews ha. As long as I don't experience em, I'll not know what I'm missing out on so should be fine

So so tempted to nip to Scan and try em all out..must resist!

I've got a 14tb RAID0 array with a few dodgy HDDs (yes I know, stupid, it was before I learned about RAID6 the thing is like 10 years old) so it's gonna cost me money getting replacement drives for all that too. And a new mouse. I had a Razer Imperator, it was awesome, but it died and could only get the Dead Adder as a replacement and I HATE it. Partly because of different grip, but mostly because I lost 2 buttons - those 2 buttons to switch speed were remappable, loved it

I thought sony have been using quantum technology on their TVs for a couple of years now :/
