Re: Gears of War 4 - Thoughts?

Yeah I've tried that - associated MS account with windows, dis-associated. No difference. Xbox app just fails with 'we are unable to sign you in at the moment. Try again later' (0x409) (0x80070005). Always using my MS account address (signing in to the website works fine).

All Xbox services in windows are running. I've tried deleting various caches but no change. It's beginning to make UPlay look good.

Try removing the xbox app and getting it again from the windows store is all I could suggest with that one

Re: Gears of War 4 - Thoughts?

My installation experience was a wee bit different. The hardest part was being able to pay for it.

I ended up changing my locale settings to UK as I have a paypal account from my old Uni days, but associated a USD card with my account. So I was able to charge the GBP game price to a USD card and save $8 in the process! I basically got the game for US$50 - thanks Brexit!

I left the install over-night, mostly leeched at around 32Mbps (4MB/s, which is the max my LTE link does). This morning, ran the game, and boom it ran fine.

Of course - I had already gotten all the patches and here's the benchmark I ran first thing on Ultra settings

I'll give it a go. Things have been a bit squiffy since the anniversary update so it might be format/clean install time (and goodbye to my app licenses inherited from the win 7 update :/)

Kalniel, Download the Windows 10.1 ISO and do a repair, I had to do it over the weekend and it sorted the issues I was having

You can only do a repair if you can boot into Windows and it means you shouldn't lose anything in the process

ISO is available free from Microsoft

Re: Gears of War 4 - Thoughts?

I contacted Microsoft support to inquire about their refund policies and beware they don't really have on similar to Stream. They offer a 1-time refund within 30-days of purchase and it depends on how your 'chat' really goes.

Having played about 1-1.5 hrs into the game, I must say that very first battle scene where you get overwhelmed with the onslaught was just incredible. Probably the most intense scene I've seen in any game - with no performance issues (and my 1080 roasting at 2Ghz and 80degC!).

As for gameplay though, cut-scenes, and the poor banter between the Gears, honestly, I just didn't seem to get sucked in at all. During the initial scene, the drunk guy and Fenix's son were going on and on about the obvious 'Girl with a gun'. Seems they spent more time making this a tech demo than getting some decent writers onboard.

Scenes walking inside buildings were rather terrible - why? The buildings/textures just aren't that great. For example, the textures on the girl are so much better than say the textures on a side of a building.

During game-play shooting any of the bad guys simply does not 'register' your hits. Instead, they just stand there like nothing has happened to them. Sure, I'm asking for a bit of realism a la Physics in an unrealistic world. Physics doesn't change though surely?

Apologies for my brief bout of winging but I'm not entirely sure that I'm taken by the game just yet. Will finish Rise of the Tomb Raider first and give this another shot later on.

And it didn't work. Took blooming ages to reinstall windows on top of itself, only to find exactly same old problem. Maybe they'll release it via another store one day?

Bsodmike - yes, agreed. There's not much AI at all, reminds me of an early 2000's shooter. Fun for a blast but ultimately not that taxing or remotely realistic. Hoping that multiplayer will be more involving.

Well - I may have given up too soon. Watched some reviews on YouTube and they were saying things pick up visually after the first Chapter.

The repetition put me off - in comparison Rise of the Tomb Raider has changing gameplay (and the cut scenes/story line are great!!) that I still feel involved somehow.

Having gotten older, I'm far too impatient when it comes to repetitive gameplay (unfortunately!).

I'm nearly finished Act 3 now. Does change visually and the gameplay does get a bit different on places but it's still mostly the same. That said it's a lot more visceral and actually pretty funny when you get good at the headshots

Horde in multiplayer is superb fun and where the game shines. Played up to level 20 with a mate on his Xbox this morning and was gutted I had to call it a day. Could happily spend a weekend on that alone.

Nice! Horde was as favourite of mine too, especially when mates dropped by on the earlier games.

I only have a PS4 now (non Pro) - so here's a hypothetical question (the answer to which should be 'Yes!')-

Suppose I get an Xbox One, with the same license for GoW4 in the Windows Store, I should be able to run it on both the Xbox One (as a different Xbox live account) + on my PC right?

That way, the Xbox user can have the TV, rather than us playing Co-op/Horde in split-screen? Thoughts?

Re: Gears of War 4 - Thoughts?

Yeah, just finished Act III myself and have been enjoying it (although had to remove my dedicated Physx card to stop the BSODs....for some mysterious reason).

I can't say I've seen much variation in gameplay and I didn't expect much, it's Gears after all

Compared to earlier Gears games, I have been finding the lancers chainsaw to be easier to get strings of kills with and easier to "QTE"-down a lancer-wielding swarm/locust mob. The revive AI seems to always get me up in the rare cases I go down as well, making restarting at checkpoints an almost non-event.

Re: Gears of War 4 - Thoughts?

I have just finished the campaign on it, really good if you liked the original games. It does seem to ride on J.D's relationship with his father which makes me think they aren't quite ready to let the new characters loose on their own just yet, the end especially reminded me of the events that unfolded for Dom in the second game.

Multiplayer matchmaking on PC seems a bit broken at the minute for the core game modes, managed to get 2 games of TDM in but with higher level players but all other modes time out at the 5 minute mark. Social is working fine but you end up in matches with high level players that must have been playing it non stop for the past 10 days or so and can literally take you out quickly.

I love this game!! The Online part of it is so much fun with a good team player its like 'Lets kick some Butt'. The graphics are just amazing. I had to update my Nvidia drivers as the older ones were having issues. I was getting a black screen when starting the game. Gears 4 weather is WOW,with Windflares & the dust all over the place.
