Pretty much as Lowe said - Elite is a fantastic game for VR.

The guy in the video is *really* green to the game, a lot of the stuff he says is incorrect, but the video does give a nice overview of what it's like to play the game in VR

    Re: Found any VR gems?

Just for the sense of being in mortal danger, I quite enjoyed Space Pirate Trainer, but it's not something you'll play for hours.

I don't think I've found the 'gem' yet though. I agree Portal was great, just a shame it's not a full game.

    Re: Found any VR gems?

I probably should steer away from this thread - I can't see a compelling reason to get an Oculus or Vive at the moment - but will bite the second something appears.
However, I did go in to Game last night - fortunately they had no PSVR stock for me to have a demo, I was ready to buy the whole kit including PS4 Pro - but I did walk out with 9 pairs of half price Sonic the Hedgehog socks
I see that Lenovo showed a VR headset at CES - I wonder how many more value VR headsets will appear this year.
And thinking about that there is no VR standard, it's probably worth me waiting to see whether Betamax or VHS (or Windows Holographic ) prevails.

    Re: Found any VR gems?

I have had the Oculus DK2 and was pretty impressed with it, and now the resolution is higher I am sure the experience is great but the price is just too high currently.

I am happy to wait and see what happens within the market, but if/when they drop to a reasonable price point then I will be getting one, whatever the victor is at that point.

I didn't realise you could move around the cockpit like that. Mind blown.

Yup, you can just walk around the cockpit. The Anaconda bridge is HUGE - even my Courier is massive. The weirdest thing however is the HUD, that really takes some getting used to compared to a screen. On a screen every HUD element is sized 'as is' and you just kinda take that for granted. When you're in VR, the HUD is actually floating as a 3D holographic projection in mid air, meaning as you lean left and right or forward and back, it all moves around. The reason the text/comms panel is so big is simply due to it being projected closer to the pilot's head.

Even though it doesn't look as clear as a monitor etc due to resolution, Elite in VR is a completely different experience that even now leaves me in absolute awe. Wait till you get in an SRV and drop underneath a ship like an Anaconda. You forget you're flying something that's not far off the size of an aircraft carrier!

    Re: Found any VR gems?

My top 5 VR games are below. I have a rift + oculus touch rather than the vive, but I think all of these are available on Steam too.

SuperHotVR - one of the best "games" out there other than Elite, and so so immersive, to the point where i've forgotten where my walls are and managed to punch them a few times trying to beat certain levels So much fun!
I expect you to die - too short, but well worth the asking price. Brilliant puzzler that makes great use of touch, and its funny at the same time
The Climb - not something you'd ever expect to be fun, but rock climbing with touch controllers is actually really really good. You can get lost in some of the environments and there is more of a puzzle element than you might expect. Spent too many hours on this, and streamed a bit too - you can see how silly i look playing it here if you are interested https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBOj4MB1yd4
Elite Dangerous - enough said...get yourself a Saitek HOTAS for £60 or so and lose days of your life to this. This is the most immersive experience out there and you really can get the feeling of being in space. I'm terrible at the game itself, but it's something that makes VR worth while to me
Project Cars - as with elite you need a wheel/pedal to make this immersive, but with a decent wheel..its another stunning example of what VR can do. Hell of a lot of fun and the perspective is near perfect. I normally don't like driving games but in VR, its a different beast.

I could list out many more..pool nation VR is a lot of fun with friends, Luckys Tail is a great platformer (that one is rift exclusive though), Virtual Desktop is fun just to have a 300" monitor in your face (or lots of them!), Serious Sam VR is the best of the "beachhead 2000" type VR shooters..but assuming you don't have limitless money to spend, those 5 will give you days and days of fun.

I really believe in VR as a future genre of gaming, and it's only going to get better as cheaper, lighter and higher resolution headsets are released in the next few years.

The Lab is pretty fun, lots of little details in there. But there's another vote for E here, the game so much better in VR.
