    Re: Photo-a-day

Do you have a higher DPI screen? Looking at it on my SP3, it is apparent that it was a really noisy photo, as a result, some of the colour information in the highlights has been clipped, looking at the 'darker bit' of the car on the front left, we see tell tail noise removal signs. Given that you were 1/250th, you could have probably dropped the ISO down a lot. I'd really be careful using ISO more than 200 on a low end Canon.

    Re: Photo-a-day

It's also rather obvious. Canon are the only people using that sensor (unlike the better sony ones used by sony, nikon, pentax... etc) it has obvious aggressive noise removal in the shadow parts on the front left side of the car. The way it screams 'wrong' to me, is because of the high difference between blocks. Most noise removal works like a regular filter kernel, what we see here, are little 'areas' which have very little difference between pixels, and then huge differences between their neighbours, this means the images has been both blurred and aggressively sharpened. The Canon sensors are really obviously worse at this than the Sony ones, so it's obviously a low end Canon. The other tell tale would be the sky in the top right. Something again is going on there, it's been 'clipped' it didn't have the dynamic range again, this means it's canon, even Josh our resident Canon fanboy has fallen in love with his Sony for the DR properties alone, Canon are simply 5+ years behind in still image quality I think as their focus has been video.

If you look at the blue in the top right, there is a very pronounced blurring that is again odd, what I think has happened here is a crude split removal aimed at removing chromatic aberrations has sucked out the colour, for it to be replaced with a blue from something else, the interesting thing here is that it didn't apparently have much detail preserved underneath, as it's blurry, but that is always going to be a fun issue when you use bayer sensors like this. The solution for that is normally an applied convolution, but what we've got there is clearly more of an autocorrelation, hence why I think another function was involved in trying to clean up the image.

After looking at the exif, the software claims to be an HDR stacking thing. I've never played with it, but it could possibly explain some of these issues too.

    Re: Photo-a-day

i'd ignore all the above r_j_k_p, there is nothing wrong with the 550D and using it with higher ISO, it trumps the 7D in that aspect anyway. and i will happily use the 7D at ISO12,800

can sit and look at numbers on a page all day, or view images at 800% to look at the subtle differences between sensors, but end of the day give the same cameras to 1 photographer, get them to photograph the same subject and print your average 9x6 or 10x8 you will not tell the difference.

throw the RAW into dropbox and send me the link if you like and i'll take a look at it

Meh those things jump out and almost scream at me, and it's been a decade since I studied this stuff. I'm almost reminded of this XKCD: https://xkcd.com/1015/

The difference is huge, when it comes to something that's been shot towards the limits of the sensor, such as the shot in question, it is very easy to tell, I can expand on any of the technical terms and algos used if people are interested.

well said. i can do the same and see differences in inferior sensors.

    Re: Photo-a-day

r_j_k_p, have you considered using some other bit of software? The image there has very, very large CA (the very green and very purple fringing around the shapes of say the leaves or the stones), the top exposure is poor too.

http://rawtherapee.com/ is a very good cross platform open source option. But myself, like many people have stumped up for lightroom.

If you want to ping me the raw file, I can edit it up so these issues are largely minimized.

I hadn't taken my DSLR with me today as I didn't want to be distracted, but damn, I wish I had, phone can't cut the mustard.
