    Flooding

Whilst I was in Vietnam last month, the tail end of typhoon Haiyan passed, creating a massive low pressure which released about 200mm of rain in 6 hours.

It was raining quite heavily, but I thought nothing much of it.

This meant that Hoi An got a couple of hours of warning as they had to open the sluice gates creating a sudden burst of water. I woke up at 5am to find lots of shouting and about 10cm of water inside the hotel

I think it was a bit stressful for the hotel staff

So like any sane person who's room was on the 4th floor, I grab my camera and go for a little boat ride to the old town.

Heading into town you really get a feel for the importance of a few cm of altitude

Also peoples idea of taking care of machines.

So to go to the deeper bits I decide to try and rent a boat

We go round the old town of Hoi An, very odd, some parts under 2m of water.

Some were more stressed than others

    Just quite bizzare.

The tiny side streets were collecting rubbish and detritus

This gives some scale as to how many shops / cafes were effected

Obviously health and safety as important as ever

I love how the flood water blended into the yellow

    Commerce continues as normal

    Re: Flooding

The next day the water started to go down already

I think everyone went out into the town

    Kids didn't care so much

Heck most people didn't appear to mind.

    Then the cleanup begins

The mud and everything looked daunting

They used water tankers to wash everything back to the river

Less than 4 days after the flood, you wouldn't know it had flooded

things were back to complete normality.

    Thanks!

Yes it's me in the tree, that's my not so sure it's a good idea face, turns out that all the rain made the tree super slippy and I did not want to fall face first into flood water. Plus my friend was holding my camera rather badly!

    n thanks Biscuit!

What is interesting is two of the photos I took with a Lumia 1020 (38 megapixel smartphone) rather than a DSLR. Any guesses which?

    Yeah it's really that obvious

The lack of control of DoF does nothing for the ability to have insane samples.

It was more the DR which was the telling thing for me. However, the K3 is very hard competition as dSLRs go.

    Re: Flooding

Not really, I couldn't help but feel my K-5 would have delivered a better 1megapixel image.

At 800 ISO I'd never notice any noise from my K-5, but the K-3 has noticeable noise.

It sounds like you are not happy with the K3!

However,in terms of DR,it simply superior to what phones have ATM.

Regarding the 1MP images ,I doubt you would notice it TBH,unless the noise was horrendously bad,and trust me I know what noisy ISO800 looks like with my ancient dSLR. Any modern dSLR would be an upgrade at ISO800 over what I have!!

I also once remember, printing some 7X5" pictures at both 5MP and 1MP resolution from a high end compact once, and TBH hardly anyone really noticed the difference.

    Re: Flooding

I am, but you know I am not a fanboy. I'm often highly critical of a shot that simply has terrible composition because I don't like how some of the diffraction in the glass.

I love the high speed capture, that's just brilliant for anything fast moving. I mean over 8 fps at full megapixelage, that's just brilliant.

I think I made a mistake not shooting to the right. I think I'll shoot 0.7 to the right from now on.

I am used to the simply amazing K-5 sensor (I still have my K-5!) I mean I could pull up +1.5 exposure on something shot at 800 ISO with the K-5, and it still looks less nosy than a 70D at 400 ISO +0ev.

Now the thing is this sensor should give me more sharpness, I just need (I think now) to shoot to the right, and be really thinking about the light and what ISO I need. Often with the k-5 I'd stick it in 1600 ISO, not really think about it. During the flood, I'm sure you can appreciate it was difficult, I wanted a fast shutter speed, I had little light, I often had my circ pol on which I swear sometimes drops 1.5ev.

I'll PM you a link to the full resolution gallery so you can see what I mean.

If I can't be bothered to do work (very likely, I'm currently 'blocked') I'll upload a bunch of stuff from the 1020.
