I love flower pics - Have got a heather garden not far from my house and when I take the dog for a walk the camera's go too. Took a few shots earlier in the week but have not had time to post anything yet.

Nothing's wrong with flower pics. It's just that if I want to see a nice flower I can just step out the front door and there's thousands. Plus, it's just about the least challenging subject matter around. I guess it comes down to the fact that when I see a photo I like it to have caught something that I would never have seen otherwise.

It's just my personal feeling on the matter. I never take flower pics any more, or at least, when I do, I kick myself for it, as it always ends up as 'just a flower pic'. They're great test shot subjects, good colours, great for exposure testing or getting good at Macro shots, but unless there's another feature on the flower, I don't see them as sufficient subject matter to warrent an entire photo to themselves....

Here...Commercial and Portrait - Ian Mercer Photography...I've taken a lot of pictures over the years since I started photography, but there's only one in that selection of my shots, and even that one I debated long and hard about including. I think it's mostly there for sentimental reasons, as it was one of my earliest pictures.

Speaking of which, here's a photo I didn't even realise I had, which I wanted to share on Photo-a-day, which isn't a flower.

. To be honest i dont expect alot, it's dark and shot with the Noctilux 50/1.0, it's a bitch to focus.

Hans, now I know why I like that shot. It reminds me of this other shot you did

And looks macro. Something about this kind of lighting that I love...

Thanks for the comments IBM, I guess as a biologist I gravitate to the sort of subject matter naturally. Of course it's practise for all sorts of things, but I genuinely don't see why the flower can't be a subject in itself.

Each to his own I suppose, for instance I love the recent portrait shots on here, but there not something I'm currently interested in taking myself; admittedly partly due to my early skill level.

@ IBM: I guess the best way I could describe the mood is melancholic, I shot it purely for the light, it spilled out from a tea house, looks sad to me

@ Rugger: I'm with you

Flowers are very hard to make distinctive, at least that IMO. But once you can spot a nice angle, or get it in a nice mood, it can be a great subject. If you're interested in flowers, check out Moaan-san Flickr page here, Flickr: Photos from moaan, he gots some of Flickrs bests

but then the picture is about the angle, or the mood, as well as the flower. There's not a single shot in Moaan's collection where the shot is purely about the flower, it's about the lighting, or the DOF, or the composition, or the colours.

If you're going to take a picture of a flower, and it's just exactly as you would find it if you went for a walk in the park, then I don't have time for it, and IMO it's a waste of time. I say the same thing for zoo and aquarium shots. What's the point if anyone can take the exact same shot every minute of every day, lighting permitting?

Unless it captures something extraordinary, something that says something other than 'I'm a flower'....well, life's too short...

2x tele on my 28-75 and my 18-55 reversed against it with flash connected via cable in my PC socket to give more light

Went to see Velvet Revolver Tonight...

Heres a few snaps...

theyre grainy as hell though, the G9's small (tiny) CCD didnt like the dark... and i was on full zoom

ah well, enough excuses...

Great to get some half sensible pics of Slash and the boys - was it a good gig?

err... well, it was a good gig, they were all on top of thier game... but to be honest, they didnt keep my attention the length of the gig and i found myself wandering off.

the support band, Pearl, however kept my attention the whole time (could be to do with the singer being fit and wearing tight leather... who knows)
