i've been using a Wacom Tablet for the past 14 years and its an amazing tool, i started with an A5 sized ADB jobbie for my mac. I then bought an A6 for my PC and then upgraded to an intuos when i found out i was going to be drawing and colouring a comic book. An artist friend of mine over in sweeden upgraded to an A3 wide for his work and sent me over his A4 tablet @ Xmas

is it an advantage over a mouse?
let me demonstrate what i can do with a Wacom and you decide

    Finished painting - Photoshop 10hrs - SRA3 in size

when painting masks etc in photos, cloning stuff, the control over the images is amazing with the tablet.. u can draw individual hair strands if needed etc. somehting that just isn't possible with a mouse (not without several 100 attempts)

Reccomended? 1000% if you need to control your image editing, you can't beat it

    That's very impressive.

How easy are they to use? I mean, your writing appearing from somewhere other than your pen (i.e. on screen) must take some getting used to...

How good is the resolution as well? Like, if you're editing an 8MP photo and want to mask well, how much more control does it give you than a mouse?

You've got me thinking I want something I hardly knew existed until I saw that post!

    Intuos2 spec:
    Pressure Sensitivity with 1024 levels:
Create natural-looking pen, brush, and eraser strokes

    Tilt Sensitivity:
Tilt your input device in either direction and create natural-looking pen, brush, and eraser strokes.

    Tool ID:
Customise your pens: With Tool ID each Intuos2 input device can be individually programmed and configured for each application. And these functions can be automatically activated, when the application is started.

    QuickPoint Area:
Divide your tablet and make two tablets in one.

    DualTrack:
Use two input devices simultaneously on one tablet.

    Absolute Positioning:
The edge of a mouse pad won't ever stop you again - Wacom tablets allow absolute positioning in which the active area represents your entire monitor screen.

    Eraser:
Get rid of errors by a flip of your pen!

    Cord-/battery-less:
No input device needs a cord or battery - the tablet itself
supplies the input device with power.

    Transparent Overlay:
Holds your original in place and makes tracing easier.

    Removable Menu Strip:
Re-program the menu buttons of the new Intuos2 A4 regular tablet to your own personal needs and print your own menu strip.

    Plug and Play:
Your Intuos2 system installs easily and quickly and is compatible with all your software.

Tablet Dimensions: 456x361x14 mm (A4 version)
    Active Area: 304.8 x 240.6 mm (A4 version)
    Pressure Levels: 1,024
    Accuracy: +/- 0.25 mm
    Resolution: 2,540 lpi (100 lpmm)
Reading Height: 10 mm (means that the pen can be 10mm above the surface of the tablet and u still have control over the cursor!)
    Max. Data Rate: 200 pps
Connection : RS-232C Serial Port Interface (Windows, SGI, Sun)
USB Port Interface (for Windows & Macintosh)

took me about 20mins of use to get used to the way the cursor moved with the pen - to begin with i was picking up the pen to re-apply to drag the cursor like u would with a mouse..

very impressive results...being more photographer than graphic artist its been a curiosity more than an intended pursuit ... but it looks like the flexibility it gives is a real winner. might investigate quietly to see whats what

Please, Don't ask for that one 'as a desktop'...its really not worth wasting your time asking, unless you're able to pay £££?

the control you will have over making a layer mask is untouchable with mouse..

touching up photos with the tablet again, leaves the mouse standing..

once you start using a tablet for editing, you will wonder how you managed without one..
