Holiday - SLR or digi cam?

I'm going away to Turkey in a couple of weeks and want to ask your advice. I'm going to want to take loads of pictures but am unsure what camera to take. I have a Nikon D50 with two lens' one standard and a telephoto lens and a very basic digital camera (3.2 MPX).

Is is a massive mistake to take the D50 or should I invest in a new smaller digital camera?

    Not sure if this helps:

It depends on what the quality of the 3mp camera is really.
When I went to Turkey (or other counrtries for that matter) I've always taken my Canon A60 (2megapixels) and I've got some fantastic shots. Obviously not to the D50 standard but it's pocketable and shots are great (it has full manual functions )

Always take my DSLR...and usually my wife's Canon G5, which never gets a look in.

My typical picture taking travel pack is my 10D, four lenses, flash, three batteries, and four CF cards, my 17" laptop, seperate external hard drive for backups plus plenty of DVDs for burning. You're only supposed to take one piece of handluggage, but when travelling with two kids, they're allowed a piece each too.

It's a bit of a pain when travelling, but nothing terrible, and I know for a fact I wouldn't take as many pictures as I do if I was limited to a compact.

you can get some great laptop/camera backpacks that are great for short breaks as they fit on as hand luggage

I'd take the D50, it's light and give better pics than the basic 3.2. Sry cant stop laughing @ the telephone lens

Yeah, Tumi does a fantastic one for large laptops which is big enough for a couple of camera bodies and some lenses....not cheap though, so when my brother in law nicked it I couldn't afford to buy a replacement

Shouldn't need anything that size though Nick, since I doubt you'll be backing up while away. 3-4Gb card wise should suffice for a couple of weeks unless you're thinking of going nuts.

I'd grab a good compact as well (Canon Ixus perhaps? Not that I'm a fanboy now or anything) been to several places where I really wouldn't have wanted to flash a big shiny camera about, but I certainly wouldn't want to be without my D50!

Take a pair of 2GB cards, if you fill them you can always go through and prune out the crappy ones. Should give you just under 1000 shots!

I would take the DSLR, but I know sometimes I feel like I am annoying people with faffing around with my camera to get decent shots all the time. Especially when they are waiting for me.

It certainly can be quicker with a compact style slr with a large range.

Capt ....What's a compact style SLR?

Raven....what size files does the D50 save at? I'd be lucky to get 300 in RAW on my Canon 10D on a 2Gb card....

I can't be faffed with SLRs on hols - i'm a compact kinda guy (lol). I'm off on my hols in a couple of weeks and if the Canon IXUS 960 comes out before hand then i'll grab it. It's a 12.1 megapixel job with useful stuff like stabilisation and decent movie modes (which I actually make use of surprisingly) over my current 5MP IXUS (which has 15fps movies, no stabilisation and is too slow).

I'm in no way a photo-geek though, it's just I really like canon gear. Go on, tell me it's crap
I have loads of friends who cart around massive amounts of camera gear but they seem to spend all their time playing with their camera rather than enjoying the view with their own eyes..

I would take an Ixus or something - I wouldn't take a huge ass SLR with me - I love my IXUS... small and you can always carry it.

Also remember - could be stolen or damaged....

I'd go with the dSLR. I hate using compacts now.

Only time i use my Panasonic TZ3 is on nights out or gigs etc. times that you really don't want a camera bag with you. I think it's only taken a coule of hundred shots in about 4 months. I can take that in a day with my 350D.
