    Help.

Ok so been taking a few shots today then all of a sudden what I think is the mirror wouldnt go up so took the lens off, and waht I saw had me a tad concerned after doing some research on the varias bits that make up my 400d it looks as if the focus plate with the little dots on it has somehow came off and is now lying inside my camera Ive left it alone and put the body cap on untill tomorrow.

Now my predicament is do I: A try to repair it myself god knows but as a part of it looks broke not sure how I would proceed, or B take it back to the place I bought it (jessops) and see if they will replace it as I only bought it in october and a little peeved that something has gone wrong already.

And just for your ammusement pics from my camera phone to show what I mean:

Oh and sorry for the late thread have been busy with family stuff today so has been a tad hectic.

    Re: Help.

I think that's a take it back to Jessops job. It's still under warranty and it should be repaired for free. I doubt you'll get it replaced as shops tend not to like to do that kind of thing, but you could always ask and see what they say.

    Re: Help.

take it back, I'd press for a replacement as a repair could take some time, be reasonable and appeal to their good wil...considering its a clear manufacturing defect - camera internals don't just explode for no reason like that - I'd say that would be the best course of action. the more charm you lay on the more likely you are to get a replacement I'd guess.

    Re: Help.

i work in jessops... take it back... even though you didnt drop it or anything, do not mention the words accidental damage unless you are asked, in which case tell them that it wasnt dropped... from my experience of working in jessops there are a lot of scammers out there so a lot of jessops staff can be skeptical at times...

    Re: Help.

Took it back today guys booked it in for a repair under warranty, my mother rang up a few hours later to question them about the sale of goods act to which the manager said he didn't have a clue and tried to imply that I had deliberately broke it even though Ive got a photography course that I'm on for the next 10 weeks and without a camera (I'm not thick).

The guy who booked it in said I'm most likely looking at a 7~8wk MINIMUM turn around and will most likely be longer, so dearest mother rang canon who gave her tons of numbers for different repair facilities including jessops and to give them a ring when its in the system (Friday) to see if they can speed it up as I'm not looking forward to having no camera for a minimum of 2 months I thought we were in the 21st century here.

    Re: Help.

Well 2 months is ridiculous to be honest. I'm pretty sure that the Sale of Goods act says that a repair shouldn't cause unnecessary inconvenience to the consumer and 8 weeks is ridiculous.

I think your first port of call is to wait until it's in the system and then try and deal directly with Canon. You'll often find that manufacturers are keener to help that the retailers (that's my experience anyway).

However if you don't get anywhere with Canon, I'd be inclined to do a bit of reading up the sale of goods act (just so you have your facts straight), call Jessops and tell them you want the camera back a LOT sooner (whether they have any control over it I don't know) or a replacement as you're starting a photography course and need the camera. Your contract is with Jessops so they are the ones responsible for sorting it out quickly.

    Re: Help.

I would but they've got it now, nearest canon dealer is in plymouth which is a bit of a trek due to where Im situated cant do anything till its in there system which will be friday hopefully then I can hopefully try and get the process sped up as canon themselves said it should be around a week and what jessops have said was a load of tosh.

    Re: Help.

the thing is, we are told to tell the customer 6 to 8 weeks, but it does vary... i know my store has a turn around of about 3-4 weeks, the reason it takes so long is it goes from the store, to central depot, to service centre and from the service centre to the repairer... i would call into the jessops in about 4 weeks... and get them to check/push the service centre...

    Re: Help.

if its still in warranty then send to an authorised canon repair center. I sent my camera to fixation several times, they were quick but one time I got it back and there was a scuff on the top of the camera and 750+ shots taken according to the exif reader. wtf?! ...plus some mug had put a dirty great finger mark INSIDE the prism housing behind the eye hole...great . . . so next time I used CPS and got canon to replace a knackered shutter themselves (for free!).

    Lehmanns I've heard are good.

    Re: Help.

Right small update to this Mr jessops have forwarded it onto Mr canon for them to repair, so thats 7 days wasted for them to forward it onto canon would have been quicker for me to do it.

Now Mr canon have said its going to be around another 3 weeks until Ill have my camera back thats when they get it as its still been delivered to them from Mr jessops.

Ive managed to move my deadline for my photography project to the 24th march and Ive told canon and jessops that I need it back by that date which to me seems reasonable so we'll see.

But tbh I think there both getting fed up with me ringing every couple of days to find out whats going on.

    Re: Help.

    Ok were nearly there now.

Jessops were adamant that it was my fault it broke and would'nt shift one bit and wanted me to pay £190 + VAT (just under half the price of the camera) for the repair to which I laughed and hung up.

Rang canon direct as jessops were been the middle man and canon confirmed again the cost to which I asked why as usual "its not covered under warranty" to which I handed the phone over my legal adviser and after an hour of talks with a couple of the big boss men at canon my camera is getting fixed under warranty and should be back with me next week.

Now just out of interest I asked fixation for a rough estimate and they came back with £90 why so much cheaper pffft.

SO hopefully this is the last update to this thread and when my camera comes back Ill let you know.
