Help pc horribly slow when vid editing

I'm wondering if it's my onboard intel gma 900, would buying a fair cheap nvidia help or do i need to spend on a quattro (not going to happen) to get much benefit? Rest of system is a core 2 duo 1.8Ghz (can't remember the model number), 2gig o ram, on a 945 based board. TIA

you don't need a Quadro based card for Video - just 3D..

yeah a 7600 or something similar should help

nice fast HDD will help as well

like mentioned above, just a decent GPU would be ok

and a decent fast hard drive, or idealy another drive for cache & render files/previews etc. and alot of ram would be good aswell, to handle the time line filling with ur edits and cuts.

2GB is fine for that task

Unless you spend mega bucks and get a high end quadro, you wont see a difference, more ram and faster HDs and you can easily get away with an nvidia or similar. That being said, if youve got youre heart set on a quadro you can get mid range ones OEM for under a £100 and entry level ones for under £50, same goes for fire GLs.

I'd suggest a SEPERATE HARD DRIVE.... when the operating system and the software are all making grabs at files from your main Operating System install (ie C drive normally) having all the films and stuff on another drive is invaluable. The more you see how the hard drive stores the data, the more you see how important that is. And storeage is cheap

But I am interested to know how a video card helps video editing, as I've never used a Quadro. Does it do the work that my CPU would normally do?

Oops....Bobster's already said what I was thinking....Quadro is for 3d creation.

OK... Hard drive...and (ducks cos it disagrees with bobster) if your're on XP, 3.2 gig is the most it can see, but another 1 gig or ram would help

lastly....what else is running? Moderm PC's are LOADED with rubbish...just LOADED! Just turning off Anti Virus while editing can make a huge diffrence, especialy if my mate Norton is involved

Press Cntrl Alt and Del together

In the bottom left hand corner is a "Processes" amount. How many things are running when the PC is freshly booted and NOTHING is open (not even a werb page) ?

i've done a fair bit of video editing, when i started editing i was on a dual 1GHz PIII with 1GB of RAM, Radeon 9700pro and RAID0 HDD, it handled 2hours of video fine
