Dark prints, probably crap photographer to blame...

Right, I am pretty bad at taking photos but have some from my recent trip to Somerset etc that whilst looking not too dark on the screen are pretty much black on printing.

    Here is the original:

This comes out almost invisible with no detail in the foreground.

This one, basically altered comes out not much better:

This one comes out fine though.

Anyone suggest what has gone wrong? Is it just that I don't have a clue?

both pics of stonehenge are really badly exposed (your camera has metered using the sky for exposure..)

salisbury catherdral is a different matter because you took it with the sun behind you..

While I know it's basic advice to take photos with the sun behind you if you 'need' to take a shot into the light are there some good guidelines to follow to get the best out of a bad shot? Like menthel I've taken a few 'holiday snaps' that needed a severe amount of photoshopping to bring out the detail because I've been a donkey and photographed into the sun (but sometimes that's the angle you want / the only opportunity to do so)

Thanks (goes away to google infill (in fill?) flash)... I have been known to try and 'trick' the camera into metering off the area of interest (I only have a compact with limited settings which paired with my cack handedness doesn't always help!)

Edit - moved pictures to the pic a day thread....

Thanks. I thought it was user error. And also the fact that the sun wouldn't move for me, even at stonehenge!

If only I had time I would love to do a photography course.
