Re: I dropped my S5700 :(
I hope you are enjoying the freedom of a dSLR. I recall moving from film to digital - shutter lag wasn't the issue, but waiting days or weeks to see the results was!
I personally think £300 is too much for the D40 as a camera alone (I think the same-priced Sony A200 thumps it handily in specification - resolution, anti-shake, DRO, auto-focus screw drive and thus cheap 2nd hand lenses...), but as an entry point to the Nikon system, it's value improves. I'm presuming this was your thinking too. I've heard the Tamron 55-200mm is a remarkably good lens for the price (<£70), though of course you should scour the used lens lists at Mifsuds, Ffordes, MXV and London Camera Exchange for some Nikon classics (keeping in mind the AF limitation). |

I like my stepdads nikons, I'll probably stick with them as a brand. Thanks for the headsup on the lens, just read some reviews of it, seems damn good for that price range.
In the internets, no one can hear you sarcasm.

And despite warning you about the AF limitations of the D40, I fall into the trap and recommend a lens that won't focus...d'oh! Do your research when lens shopping - you need Nikon lenses designated AF-S, Sigma lenses designated HSM, and you'll have to check the Tamrons cases by case.
