Question My Peugeot 306 LX 1.4 litre Petrol

My Peugeot 306 LX 1.4 litre Petrol.

Since i bought it I have had a few problems with it but this is a new one that appears to be emerging.

The car is sometimes "hoping" like.... jumping every so often as if its not getting enough petrol, i might be wrong but this is what it feels like. Also when it does this there is a strong smell of petrol.

The car does this almost every day now and im starting to worry about it. Somtimes the car wont even start and i have to restart the battery to start the car again.

I broke down a long time ago when it didnt happen so often and i was told by the AA man that he thinks it might be somthing to do with fuel/air mixture.

If anyone has any thoughts/advice on this problem I would really appreciate it!

    Luke.

If it is the miixture you shouldnt be smelling petrol from inside the car OR from under the bonnet - only at exhaust.

I would start by checking all the fuel and inlet/vacuum hoses to check there is no leaks.

I have checked all the hoses I can see under the bonnet (im not much of a mechanic). All the ones i can see Iv checked.

What do you think I should do next? Its wierd because the car only gets jumpy and smells of petrol every so often..... sometimes its fine others its not!

Evaporative emissions system - stores fuel vapor from tank in a charcoal cannister in bonnet.

If its only in hot weather, then I think its that ^.

Doubt the problem is overfueling. Mine has a big overfueling problem when cold, untill the sensor warms up (sooty smoke), but since the fuel is getting partially burnt, it doesnt smell too much like petrol, but hard to describe, and it can only be smelt from the exhaust or in garage.
ECU reset might still be a good idea (disconnect battery for a short while, read book first make sure you have any codes for cd/radio).

    Zak33's system
that sounds like it needs new plugs or more likely a new ignition pack.

the smell of fuel is normally cos it's not burning in the cylinders cos the sparks not firing hard enough.
