Brake lights always on ! help !!

Hi I have a ford Focus 1999. Recently I noticed the brake lights are always on. i had a look at the brakes and i noticed the microswitch is loose and hanging down. When i click on the button the lights go off. Is it easy to put it back myself or do i need to take it into a mechanic. Anyone any idea how much they will charge me?

What do you mean microswitch - the switch that operates the lights, is it not a regular push to make switch operated by the pedal? I remember changing one once, I think it was just unplug the old switch remove and replace with a new one that cost about 50p. No tools needed.

Cool in the daylight it had fallen out. i put it back in its slot and turned it 90 degrees to lock it back in. the brake lights only come on when i brake now. I also replaced both back brake lights as one had burnt out being on all the time.

make sure it was pushed in just enough to press the switch all the way in without holding the peddle off its stop. you must be able to pull the brake pedal back on its stop without knocking the switch out, i dare say thats why it fell out in the 1st place due to it being in to far.
