Replacing window glass?
Long story short, I went on a booze cruise a couple of weeks ago, and having nipped up to Belgium to purchase 30 packs of Golden Virginia and two bottles of Tia Maria, I then forgot to hide them when we parked up in Calais and went into the hypermarket for bulk booze purchasing. When we came back, someone had broken one of the rear windows and had it all away. Moral of the story- don't get careless.
So anyway- I've been driving around with a binbag gaffa taped over the hole for the last couple of weeks, which is a) irritatingly flappy and b) bad for all round visibility. It needs fixing, but since I'm already down £125 I'm loathe to pay anyone to do the job for me when I reckon I could most likely do it myself. Is it within the means of a determined amateur? It's only a manual winder etc. (it's a base model 1.9D RL Clio Mk1 Phase II). How much would a breaker want for the glass? And is it fairly obvious how to put it in? All advice appreciated . |

Re: Replacing window glass?
Don't know specific to your clio, but I've never had problems fitting a door glass.
Should be doable for a "determined amateur" Check out the dealers for a glass, it could be cheaper than you think. |

Re: Replacing window glass?
Phone your insurance, most window claims carry no excess and shouldn't be classed as a claim against any NCB you have. I've just had to make a claim for 2 sidewindows on my 181, total cost was almost £1k as everything needed to be made.

Re: Replacing window glass?
Easier said than done- it's my mum's car which I'm borrowing while she's on a 4-month holiday. I'm a named driver on her policy, so I'm on slightly dodgy ground driving it around while she's away (although I'm a driver by trade, and I have 6 years NCB to her 2, so IMO I'm no more of a risk).

Re: Replacing window glass?
if its a door glass... wouldnt like to try myself especially on a recent car... doors have a lot of stuff in them - recent cars have bars in the door to reinforce it/help prevent theft.
Easyer imo would be to get a replacement door either at breakers or owners club.. easy to fit. the issue here is then the lock.. equally a pita to change... but you could try to get a key with the door ![]() quater glass however is easy.. most you just pull out the rubber and the glass will fall out with it. |

Have a look for advice on the clio forums, it'll be quicker and you'll be more likely to get the right advice as every car is slightly different.

Re: Replacing window glass?
In my experience, windy windows are much easier to replace than fixed ones - no fiddly sealing gubbins to deal with. Pop the door card off and have a look - it'll either be a case of "oh that looks easy enough" or "better take it to someone who knows what they're doing" Glass should be easy enough to find from a breaker's.

Re: Replacing window glass?
Well, yesterday I finally got round to buying some replacement glass. I only had to phone one breaker, so god knows why I didn't do it weeks ago. Anyway, having exchanged a crisp £20 note for a 15 year old bit of glass, I enquired how much it would be to fit it. "One of our lads does it out of hours" came the reply, "a Pony mate. 25 notes". "£25 notes!" thought I, "clearly this chancer is having a giraffe. It can't be that hard".
Famous last words. Today after getting home from my early shift at work, I set about fitting it. Two hours, one skinned knuckle, one sheared stud and a lot of swearing later, I was forced to conclude that 25 quid probably was fair after all. I now have a window that doesn't wind as well as it used to, and I have my doubts about how well it seals. On the plus side I feel that I've 'earned' the £25 and I'll enjoy spending it in the pub tonight . |
