    Unhappy Vauxhall Vectra 1,6

I have been experiencing some problems with my vectra. It started with a juddering while driving in no perticular gear just random, also when pulling away from junction or lights. This has progressed to excessive reeving (dont have a reve counter) this happens when sitting in traffic or after pulling away the reeving is followed by the engine cutting out! The idle is all over the place when this happens.
I have changed the plugs, a new fuel filter, and the fuel injector valve has had a bit or a "blow" out clean and a rubber hose has been replaced. The car ran fine for 2 days and now the old problems are back again.....any ideas as to what I can try next before I pull out of a junction and it lets me down Its getting a bit scary now

Sounds like the clutch has gone to me. Sure fire test is to give it some beans. If you hear the engine revving up but no increase in speed thats your problem

If its not the clutch then to me it sounds like a vacuum leak or bad MAF sensor. Does it happen all the time and not just cold/warmed up?
First check no loose hoses around the intake manifold, and no hissing sound.

You can take your MAF sensor out. This will be between the air filter and butterfly. Firstly check the two wires inside are intact by holding it upto a light, they are small and hard to see. If they look dirty, they can be removed from the housing by undoing the torx? screws on top, then can be cleaned *very* gently using a piece of tissue. When I done this on the 66k fiesta the tissue was black afterwards.

Could also be a bad idle speed control valve

Chap. Loads of Vectra's do that
    Idle Air Control Valve (IAC)
    or
    Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve

And tbh, all are fairly expensive

Prolly be a Vauxhall main dealer to tell you which, and they don't get it right first time tbh

take the egr valve out and clean it m8ty (fairly easy to do )
if u disconnect the idle control valve and run it see if it is idling all over place ( to eliminate problem )

DO NOT USE HEATHROW ENGINE CENTRE !!!

many thanks this work is planned for Saturday. There really is no pattern to it at all I have been going days without a hitch then plays up all the time. I have noticed at times the tick over is erratic and this is usually an sign its going to start reeving up also tend to get a whiff of petrol then it cuts out!

Is the engine management light coming on?

Topbuzz Web Site - Technical Information - ECU Fault Codes @ www.topbuzz.co.uk

I used to use this quite regularly on my old astra.

    Re: Vauxhall Vectra 1,6

The ERG valve has been replaced and the revving has all but gone bar a couple of occasions with a smell of fuel, but it soon recovers!
The sluggish problem is there still, but again no way as bad. I notice it when I’m driving once I ease off the accelerator and then re apply pressure it has a flat spot!!! The main problem is its so random.... I will look into these sensors now. The EGR valve has been cleaned. My only concern is these problems will have an effect on my emission readings for MOT other than that guess I can live with it in the short term my garage said not much point in a diagnostic as no engine management light

    Re: Vauxhall Vectra 1,6

Thanks.......... I have a new fuel filter and the lines look good. The fuel injector had a good "blow" out and I have been told that it is possible to clean out the injector by spraying a chemical into the valve this is a delicate operation. I think these Vectras only have one injector so it’s a possibility. I'll give that a go once the sensors have been checked .
