Hot Starting Problem - Diesel Fuel Evaporation Issue???

My other half has an 05 Kia Sportage Diesel. In warm weather when the engine is hot it has issues starting. Eg. been on a driving around then stop for 5 mins at the petrol station or shops then try to start the car and it wont fire or even try to, it just turns over. Leave it another couple of mins and it'll fire up straight away.

To me this sounds like a fuel evaporation issue like you used to get on older petrol engines but never heard this happen with a diesel. But then my experience of oil burners is limited.

Took it to a garage and they had no clue as there was no error codes or the like. So anybody have any ideas?

It is possibly the crank sensor failing when hot or EGR valve sticking open.

Wouldn't both of them give a code?

Crank sensor won't always generate a fault code. It may be giving a bad signal but, A signal no less.

EGR valve (if it is not a vacuum operated unit) should give a fault code or at least be able to see it's position in live data.

However this all depends on the said garages diagnostic equipments compatibility.

I would not recommend changing anything unless his 100% sure a part is at fault.

I'd test the crank sensor with a scope when cold and then again when hot to see if the amplitude is weaker when hot.

Was it a Kia dealer you was using? Not that I have much faith in them. They told one of my friends he had a stone in the belt tensioner causing the noise - It was just the belt was knackered and slipping.

No it wasn't a Kia dealer, just a local indy that she use's in between scheduled services. It's due it's next service soon at the dealer so I'll mention it to them and ask them to look at the crank sensor & EGR valve.
