306 Fan belt Slipping
Hi All, Long time no post
![]() My fan belt has just started to slip on my 306 XS-S 1996 1.6i 8v, no problem I think confidently to myself. This is an easy DIY job. I consulted the Haynes manual to check the correct procedure and low and behold the wonders of french engineering.... All the belts run off a 'serpantine' system which is basically one motor and (here's the good part) the fan belt has an auto tensioning system . Now the problem with this is that it's good if it works but very annoying if it doesn't. So this is my predicament, Do I tighten the belt anyway and hope all goes well. Do I go down the route of finding, checking and more than likely replacing the fan belt tensioner or do i just leave it and let my car squeel like a pig when it's cold ![]() My mechanical knoweldge is limited so try not to get to technical ![]() ![]() |

Why not change the belt? It's more likely to have stretched and the adjuster come to it's limit.
You say "Do I tighten the belt anyway and hope all goes well" how do you do that if it's self adjusting? And you say about replacing the tensioner, but don't mention the most likely reason "the fan belt's worn". filbert. |

Try & get hold of some belt dresser or similar & clean the belts & pullys. May be a spot of grease or oil has got on there & is causing the squeal when cold & ther is condensation present. If the belt is not cracked or perished then try cranking up the tension a smidge.
