    Looking for good PS3 FPS

    Hi there!

I have been a massive fan of first-person shooters ever since the day of Medal of Honor for the PS1. but nowadays it's all about bigger guns, big storylines, real-life graphics et al.

    i also noticed several things:

    1. it's Call of Duty vs Battlefield

    2. No more WWII storylines instead post-WWII storylines

    3. Mostly concentrated on those americans.

why in the world would a game just concentrate on a "multi-national" (i.e. "mostly" american) soldier force-group that takes on a rich/powerful/has-loads-of ammos kinda tyrant on a pseudo/"based-on-reality" arching storylines?

i'm disappointed really. why not feature members of say british SAS or say a japanese/interpol coop group. can't you see what i mean here?

so my questions are..do you guys agree on my assessment? and what FPS games would you recommend me getting based on an all-encompassing/truly multi-national storyline that involves NOT JUST AMERICANS.

    please advice. thanks.

n.b. i currently have a PS3 (and an HTC Flyer Android tablet)

re: Looking for good PS3 FPS

Medal of Honor 2010 is a good one, you get a mixture of different teams. If I remember one of the teams is a British SAS team. Only Downside is that the SP campaign is a bit short, its one hell of a ride though start to finish. Multiplayer is ok, the objective based game is the best one as it is fast paced. Only downside is that the maps are quite small and a sniper can take someone out from one end of the map to the other end.

Homefront is another decent FPS, granted its set in America, however, its set in an alternative universe where Korea have succesfully captured America. You are a resistance fighter on it. Once again the SP is a bit short, the multiplayer is actually fun and working in a team people do actually stick together in small squads to achieve objectives.

Farcry 2. Set out in Africa, with the usual non specific state that is being ruled by 2 warring factions / resistance groups. Then you have an arms dealer inbetween the 2 factions selling to both sides. You are a merc that has to go in, do missions for the factions which in turn will get you closer to the dealer and eventually take him out. Only minor gripe is one that has been brought up so many times. The enemies respawning quickly. You pass say a checkpoint on the way to a mission, take everyone out then do the objective further up the road. When heading back say 10 mins later the enemies at the checkpoint have respawned. It can get a little tedious at times and can slow the progress. It is still a damned good game though. Havnt really played the multi on it, should really as I got the fortunes edition with the extra maps etc.

Then you have the non military shooters like RAGE which I thoroughly enjoyed, no nonsense typically id shooter. FEAR series are good no nonsense shooters, the first game tends to drag on a bit near the end turning more into corridor based. FEAR 2 is the same but they have solid shooter mechanics. You also have the Stalker series which is open world set round the Chernobyl disaster (not sure if these are available on console though, cant remember). Metro 2033, similar type of setting as Stalker, after nuclear disaster people live in the tunnels under the cities, you have mutants and other factions to contend with, kind of a horror type FPS, this one is available on console.

There are so many games in this category available. I suggest you look into older titles, have a shop around. You may be surprised what you actually find. Anothert good thing, if you have an older PC that wont run the newest stuff out there the back catalogue of games in unbelievable. Games like Blood 2, System Shock 2 etc are fantastic (System Shock 2 requires some tinkering to get going but worth it)

re: Looking for good PS3 FPS

I would most probablly concentrate on either WWII or current reality-based military shooters like MoH or CoD. I have heard about the new Medal of Honor but it was short. is there any additional updates (like added levels or maps?) to it?

i also found out about CoD: Modern Warfare. is it any good?

re: Looking for good PS3 FPS

you know i have Killzone 2 right now and it's a really great FPS game to play but that is in an altogether different "setting".

The way it stands right now i am choosing between CoD4: Modern Warfare and the new Medal of Honor game; again heard about the latter's short SP campaign unless there are new levels.stages/maps/campaigns to download.

    so, what you think guys?

re: Looking for good PS3 FPS

Crysis has just come out on PS3, definately worth looking into.

If you are looking for just warfare type shooters you are REALLY limiting your choice, you literally want to be looking at CoD and BF series, there is also a huge back catalogue of the MoH games which have different campaigns across different theaters. You can get a MoH set with quite a few of the earlier games from GAME for about a tenner now, worthwhile buy with it covering quite a bit of stuff from WW2 etc

MoH set available from Amazon :

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Medal-Honor-...9290495&sr=8-7

Would give you loads of hours play that one. They are really good games also to boot.

re: Looking for good PS3 FPS

Without moving into more fantasy stuff, like Fallout, ME or Deus Ex. You're pretty much right, it's basically good ole yanks beating down an endless supply of 'shady lookin forners'. Ultimately it's money, America and it's allies account for the single biggest market share and thus will be cast as the hero, not to mention spending more money on their military than everyone else combined.

For a solid single player story not focused around the good ole US of A, somewhat grounded in reality and not WW2.. errrm... ah... you got me tbh. Oh well at least their military has the coolest toys. Closest I can think of really would be MW1's SP campaign, which I thought was very good, but sadly very short and still very America-centric.

For a realistic and not so American focused, although admittedly only via mods, but they're generally high quality, try the ARMA series.

Re: Looking for good PS3 FPS

Well, you know had Resistance 1 but didn't like it. i think maybe because it loads/re-starts quite slowly and maybe i got tired of a storyline that involves aliens as enemies when you are killed unlike Killzone 2 which i liked a lot better. ('nuff sed!)

Read about Singularity and the reviews were so-so i.e. average to not-so-above-average. it's 50/50 and maybe a safe choice which i shall alo might consider.

I know i'm limiting myself on FPS but what i want is just an enjoyable ride of a storyline and not about big guns, fancy gadgets, etc.

if its 1. a miltary set in the present or the not-so distant future with an enemy (like a tyrant or anti-christish or a russian/chinese traditional rich baddy kinda thing) and 2. not too america-centered storyline/characters then maybe would you say i'm on the right path with either CoD: Modern Warfare and Medal Of Honor....?

Re: Looking for good PS3 FPS

In all honesty I thought the first CoD MW game was average, Got through the SP campaign but didnt enjoy it that much. Just felt it dragged on a bit, nuclear bit was definately an OMG moment but I felt that was the height of the campaign (wont go into anymore detail with that).

MoH is REALLY good and fast paced, if you get the tier 1 edition you get an extra online component where there is a leaderboard for speed, accuracy etc. The SP campaign like I mentioned previously is around 7 hours start to finish tops and that is if you die and have to restart checkpoints. The campaign though jumps between different teams, American and British. The British night mission where you have to do stealth kills to reach your objective is really tense, there is an excellent American push also where you have to move up a canyon and assault a stronghold that is guarded by a gunner, goes pear shaped and you have to hold out nearby while getting attacked from all angles. Its absolutely awesome. The good thing about the multi on it is that it runs on a different engine. SP runs on UE3 and MP runs on Frostbite 2 and DICE had something to do with it.

It all depends on what you are looking for. You could probably get MoH 2010 and also that back catalogue set for about the same price as the first MW game (Its still a bit pricey considering its age). Like I said if you have a standard PC with a graphics accelerator in it you will be able to run the previous games in the series also.

Re: Looking for good PS3 FPS

I'm concentrating on PS3-only titles at the moment.

But i found out about Dead Island. looks gory but looks promising on me....

zombie shooters could also do for me.

Def would look into Cryssis but zombie/military would be the bomb for now. aliens/space/future FPS will have to take a back seat i think...

Re: Looking for good PS3 FPS

FPS PS3 titles i would defiantly recommend killzone 3 by far the best fps their is on the ps3 the story is great and if you have followed the story from the ps2 then you will right at home. Plus the mutiplayer matches are frantic and intense in a good way. Close enclosed maps, moderate amount of weapons and classes to choose from.

    Other ps3 exclusives worth mentioning:
    resistance 3
    uncharted 3
    MAG
    SOCOM 4

I'm on the beta test for Dust514 - and (NDA bound) - it's worth signing up if you have the chance! Multiple control methods are interesting, though needs another few months, to say the least.
