PS3 slim won't play DVD's and sounds like it's ejecting them.

14 months old. Used for films twice per week tops. And it's decided to chuck a wobbler.

Placing a DVD or Blueray in, it sounds like it's ejecting it again and then it fails to play the disk. This happens after 30 seconds of drive grinding noises at what sounds like the read-head whips itself into a frenzy.

It is random whwn we get success.. disk in... disk out..... disk in... disk out... and once succesful it plays perfectly.

I got it from Sainsbury's last year so shall I take it back and try for a replacement, becuase it's simply not good enough. It doesn't get used by children, it's rarely used for gamers, it's in immaculate condition in a cinema room plugged into a Projector.

Or is it a Sony return's job?

My PS3 does that every so often, very, very sporadically though and it's usually down to me attempting to slot the disc in a slight angle or without enough force. It's also one of the first batch of old shape forty gigs though and it has had a battering so I cut it some slack. For a newish, barely used Slim to be doing that there must be something properly wrong :/

Sony's warranty for mechanical failures is twelve months if I remember rightly so they'll want to charge you to refurbish it and knowing how much Sony charge to refurbish a YLD console it probably won't be cheap. Plus the warranty on any console you get back from them gets kicked down to three months instead of twelve.

I'm not hot on Sainsburys returns policy these days, but you probably stand a much better chance of getting it replaced by making a fuss at their customer services desk with the Sale of Goods act than you will down the phone to Sony customer services.

You're just putting it in wrong, make sure it's the right hole, & if it's a bit tight, apply a little lube, don't just spit 'n' shove.

right.. ful monty factory reset including 18 hour format.. just like the Sony man told me.

Lost everything.... and to no avail.

It still does it.

It plays music straight away.. plays my one game (Gran Turismo) straight away.. but won't play DVD's or Blurays unless I put them in and out over 'n over.

Totally bloody useless.

Have run the full format twice, and done the shorter system file repair too. No good

13 minutes on the phone to customer support chap called Wajid at Sony tonight and he's organised a collection for Thursday, a 7 day delay while they check that I've not tampered with it (untouched, the thing is mint) and then new replacement

Sony +1 at moment. Wajid was proper good chap too.

That's a really good result from Sony customer support, not too many years ago a friend with a YLoD issue on an un-modified sixty gig called them and was told in no uncertain terms he'd be paying £130 for a refurb on a console less than eighteen months old. Glad to see things have changed

it's had an easy life. Only ever played one game. I know exactly how many hours it's been used for all tasks because it's plugged into the only other HDMI device in my house... a projector... with a bulb timer. So I can tell you to the hour how many hours it's been used for.

Also the serial number clearly implied to the helper that it was a new unit very close to when I bought it.. I guess a lot of them sit unsold in stock for a while. I think mine was very recently instore.

And because it won't play Blueray or DVD's but will play Gran Turismo Prologue which is also a blueray, and will play music CD's instantly, it's clearly a fault.

Gonna miss it for that week though. Merlin on Iplayer HD rocks.

Thats a good result, I know Sony did a swap out straight away for a friend of mine who had a similar problem. He took out a support contract for 3 years though, can't recall what it cost but I don't think it was much. I hope mine doesnt start playing up, got it in a bundle with GT5 when that came out!

I'd have been ok if it was occassional, like Knoxxy's.. you can live with that,,,, pop disc out .. pop it back in .. job done.

But this was like a switch going off. One day it was fine.. the next it was broken. And that was that.

But having the game boot fine everytime.. and the music being fine.. but DVD's and bluerays making this whirring up and down.. and up.. and down. and then sounding like it was ejecting.. and it NOT ejecting.. then whirring up and down again, with no errors or fault screens was maddening.

If it was a Wii I'd prolly have not fretted too much. They're cheap. But this thing was so expensive.
