New xps 15 or new inspiron 7000

    Hey All,

I am in the market for a new laptop and Im currently stuck between these 2.

Spec wise it would seem that an xps would be nearly twice as much fro the same spec as the inspiron and I don't know if the price difference is worth it?

    Any ideas?

    Any other suggestions.

I want an i7 cpu, ram and hdisk aren't as important as I'd likely upgrade them myself instead of paying the dell/manufacturer premium.

I'd be using it as my primary work machine for programming and some gaming as well but the gaming isnt the most impotant thing

If you can get a 6700HQ/7700HQ Inspiron 15 7000 for £550-650 then I'd go for it, especially if it is the new version.

Re: New xps 15 or new inspiron 7000

If you go for the Inspiron get the 4K display, the 1080p option is pretty poor.

The XPS is lighter, nice looking, vastly improved display. If you can afford it go for the XPS. I went for the Inspiron last year and kind of regret it now. It's a perfectly solid laptop, but I just know I compromised every time I use it. Here's Dave 2D's review of the Inspiron.

    Thanks fro the review

I think That review has sold me on the XPS. The screen doesn't look great on the inspiron.

I reckon I would be more likely to regret not spending the money on an xps than to think I should have went cheaper

Re: New xps 15 or new inspiron 7000

Lost access to my old account - but saw this post and thought I'd add my 2p.

    I have a dell precision 5510 (i7 6830HQ, 32GB ram, 512GB SSD, 4K screen, standard battery) for work (basically a re-branded XPS 15) and a Lenovo T460p (i7 6700HQ, 16GB ram, 256GB SSD, 1440p screen, extended battery) for home and have noticed the following:
    - The dell runs very hot! So much so that it is usually throttling to a slower speed than the Lenovo.
    - The dell has a horrid keyboard (in my opinion). The keys don't have enough travel, and are really loud.
    - The dell has buggy drivers. There is a thunderbolt/usb3 port, but getting it to work with a dock/display adapter has been impossible so far .
    - The dell has a nice (but shiny) screen. You will want to use it in the dark - but then it is brilliant!
    - The dell is lighter
    - The dell cost about 2x as much

Overall I would suggest looking at something like the Lenovo as we use Dell's exclusively at work and of about 100 new laptops (less than 1 year old) about 10-20 of them have faulty memory and display driver issues.

Re: New xps 15 or new inspiron 7000

    Thanks for the help ppl

I've just about settled ont he xps 15 now.

I've looked at lenovo but for the price I can't find anything that looks as sleek as the xps...

My issue now is 1080p or 4k.

I had just about settled on getting the 1080p screen as I thought the extra 200 quid for the 4k seemed a lot especially as the battery would get drained a lot faster but I'm having doubts now.

So ppl should I go 4k or 1080p?

    4k is a lovely screen.

Re: New xps 15 or new inspiron 7000

Depending on the programs you use, 4K may not scale that well yet. They seem to be getting better, but the programs I have issues with are:
    - R Studio
    - Virtual Box; when running VM's the scaling is non-existent. Have not tried hyper-v or other

I would expect that problems will be ironed out soon, but it is something to bear in mind.

    The PPI is:
    - 15 inch @ 1080 ~ 147
    - 15 inch @ 4K ~ 294
    - 14 inch @ 1440 ~ 204
in normal usage I would not expect you would see much difference (I don't see any between my Lenovo and Dell unless I an really close to the screen).

If it were in the Inspiron I would have definitely gone 4k for a better quality panel. However in the XPS I would imagine even the 1080p screen is of reasonable quality.

Someone posted this FHD panel up today, they use the same in the 9550/9560 https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_c...&v=InmmRdMYBhs

Re: New xps 15 or new inspiron 7000

THe bleed is a bit worrying especially for the price...

I have kind of written of the inspiron as whilst it is a well specced machine the build quality doesnt look as solid and the battery life isn't as long.

I'm going to be using it predominantly as a work machine so the 1050ti isn't really needed but the extra battery the 97W bring would be.

It's a shame Dell doesn't have retail stores or that these aren't in the big shops yet. Really could do with seeing them side by side..

See if John Lewis has the 9550 in stock to view, same thing, just updated internals.

    Good idea

I am leaning towards the 4k atm. From what I've seen the battery life is still really decent and I'll no doubt be using it plugged in whilst in work..

That's hardly surprising, since you're essentially running different hardware within the VM - the guest OS isn't going to magically understand the scaling of the host OS, all it sees is a virtual display of "X" resolution.

I use VirtualBox to run VMs on my works laptop and setting the scaling within the VM works flawlessly. In fact, my experience with scaling, particularly on Windows 10, is excellent.

Out of those two I'd probably go with the Inspiron 7000, thats mainly down to personal preference and the fact I had a Inspiron before which I never had any issues with.

You could by an Inspiron now and then replace it next year with the new model as the XPS costs twice as much :-)
