gvim, or straight VI if gvim isn't available.

I have used a *lot* of different operation systems over the years, and only two editors have been available across all of them, VI and EMACS. I don't get on with EMACS, so VI it is.

Example, even my now ancient series one TiVo PVR with it's 54MHz PowerPC cpu and 16MB (yes sixteen megabytes) of ram has vim on it

If they priced it at say $10, I'd be interested, but at the price they charge I just don't get it. I suppose its because most text I handle has a grammar and type system, which I want to navigate via, rather than just pure textual.
The main thing it offers over notepad++ is the autocompletion, it works really well, it saves a lot of typing. The other big plus is the shortcuts/filename autocompletion to open a file and jump to a class/function in it.

Because I mainly write Python, IDEs are limited in what they can do because of how dynamic the language is, so Sublime is ideal. For Java or C# etc, I'd always want to use a proper IDE.

I'd say at the current price of Sublime it's only really worth it if you write a lot in languages like Python or Ruby.

When I was primarily a linux user TexMakerX for writing my thesis and emacs for the odd bit of programming I needed to do. Since then the only thing I've needed to be involved in has been in Teradata's SQL engine, which is too nicely integrated to the DB to use anything else.

Notepad++, I've try Sublime a few times...I can't see the appeal. I tend to try it now and then to see if I can find it's appeal.

Re: What's your favourite text editor?

    UltraEdit.

I don't do much text editing these days, or at least, not that type of text editing. But when I did, it was as good as anything I tried and better than many. And going to it from edlin sure was an eye opener, that latter having all the grace and sophistication of a neanderthal.

What's highly rated and what isn't, these days, I've no idea. I do vaguely remember UltraEdit as not being particularly cheap, certainly not free. Again, these days, no idea.

Vim (or sometimes piping *NIX shell utilities). I really can't stand anything else for any considerable length of time.

Vim runs in a virtual terminal environment, while Gvim runs a vim instance in a GTK windowing environment. Not a great deal much beyond that.
