On Windows it's Notepad++ and elsewhere usually vim or nano.
You guys realise Sublime Text 3 respects your freedom and doesn't force you to pay for a licence.. right?

Sublime. So many plugins and extensions, runs flawlessly.
For any odd text-related stuff I swear by UltraEdit.
For programming (C++ mainly) it's the Visual Studio IDE with Visual Assist.
I'd have to agree, for general purpose editing Notepad++ gets my vote.

Back in the day: BBEdit, nowadays Notepad++ on windows (very popular), Textwrangler on OS X and gEdit or Emacs on linux
