First post so be gentle (also, feel free to move if this isn't the most appropriate section for this to be in).

I did a quick search and couldn't find a mention of this anywhere but I'm sure it would be of interest for people who frequent this section of the forum

Drop in some details and by the looks of it they are just handing out dev boards, sort of a Rasp Pi competitor.

I'm not going to lie, I have never done any form of coding and have no experience in any languages (which I put down in the questionnaire) but I got an e-mail saying they would confirm when my board has been shipped.

Yeah so hopefully I'll be getting one of these soon, this link was announced during the last BUILD conference.

This is part of the Internet of Things, it's basically an intel low powered board. I wouldn't compared it to a rasp pi, as they aren't really the same, they aren't designed to be used the same. If you are wanting something that could be a media PC or similar, this is most definitely not it.

If you are wanting a board which can be used to connect something to the internet, with a bunch of fairly high level language glue code logic, this is it. It's got a bunch of GPIO pins, in similar layout to Arduino, it also has both host and slave USB and Ethernet.

Programming this will be built around using an azure middle tier service.

Would this be suitable for something like a webcam connected over a network to monitor things like pets??

This is more for people wanting to hack their own thing. I doubt you will find much support for easy out of the box stuff for at least a few months. If you don't know how to compile up hello world in visual studio, I would save your time and not bother with one of these boards.

As to handling say a webcam, yes it should be fairly easy, it should have more than enough power, you could even apply rules for detection. But you may well find you'd have to build a LOT of that code yourself.

Nice, thanks for that, wouldn't be making a keyboard but could use some more low power devices that can be used for random projects. Doing some BT proximity stuff at the minute things like this could be useful for tracking.

If you want webcams over IP etc get a Raspberry Pi, more projects like that already have examples unless you want to build it yourself

That's interesting - I was thinking of RFI tag based proximity for a IP cams - to monitor the pets.
