    IKM Tests

What do you think of these tests? I have done one a couple years ago as part of a hiring process and my thoughts were that the tests are a waste of time and I probably don't want to work for someone who thinks that they are a good measure of programming ability.

I've been asked to do one again as part of a hiring process and I wanted to get some other opinions before I just turn them down.

I'd be interested to hear thoughts from both sides, those doing the tests and those sending them out.
I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.

    Re: IKM Tests

Don't know if you did the test, but I'd suggest doing it again.

I seem to recall it takes about one hour and is multiple choice. I did a Java one in 2010, and found it similar to the Certified Programmer exam that I did back in 2001. I didn't do well on some pointless things like graphics APIs - who cares? Think that was for Goldman Sachs but I never went for the interview anyway.

Agree they aren't necessarily a good way to judge ability, compared to writing real code or a pair-programming exercise, but big companies like to have a multi-stage screening process which I can understand.

The actual developers and tech managers might not care much about the result and just want to screen out some truly bad developers, so don't let it put you off until you know more about the company and how they do development. At the very least it might remind you of some tools or APIs you've not worked with for a while.
