Do Corsair PSUs have the appropriate connectors for the 9800GX2?
Do Corsair PSUs have the appropriate connectors for the 9800GX2?
There is a mechanical issue with the 9800 cards and virtually ALL PSUs. Nvidia has made the locking tab slot on the card narrow enough that most 8pin and most 6+2 pin connectors will not fully snap in. They will work electrically but, the tab will not lock the connector into the slot on the card. Corsair PSU's will work just fine electrically but you may either have to leave the tab out of the slot temporarily or cut the tab off. Nvidia is supposed to supply their partners with a proper adapter within a couple of weeks to negate the need for this. If you can't wait or if your cable will not work with the tab on it, you can clip the tab off the PCI-e cable. OFFICIAL CORSAIR STATEMENT: If you need to clip the tab on the PCI-e connector to make the connector work with these cards, it DOES NOT constitute a voided warranty. Any other modifications to the cables or PSU as stated by the warranty terms WILL constitute a voided warranty. |

Yellowbeard, could you please provide clarification on this:
The link to the Corsair website you provided indicates that two "PCI-E 8 pin" connectors are provided with the HX-Series. Are these in fact 6+2 connectors providing the 8 required pins or are these simply a fixed 8-pin size? If they are fixed 8-pins, how would I go about providing a 6-pin connection as the 9800 GX2 requires one 8-pin and one 6-pin connection. Thanks in advance! |

I'll clarify and repost. In the mean time, you may get some useful info here:
UPDATE LINKY TO JONNYGURU.COM From the post: So Nvidia's whole "power supply manufacturers aren't following spec" spiel is bunk. So to summarize..... PCI-SIG states that the 8-pin receptacle can accept a 6-pin plug, even though it has an offset clip. Strike 1. PCI-SIG accepts the adoption of 6+2-pin plugs that can accommodate both 6-pin and 8-pin receptacles. Strike 2. PCI-SIG states how wide the clip can be so the receptacle can accept 6+2-pin plugs. Strike 3! You're OUT! |

Re: Do Corsair PSUs have the appropriate connectors for the 9800GX2?
Yellowbeard, Thank you for providing this additional information. What I am really trying to ascertain however is if the HX620 Power supply comes with 6+2 connectors such that I can meet this requirement:
or are the provided connectors 8-pin in size without an offset clip hence resulting in them not fitting in the 6-pin slot The HX page on the corsair website shows what appears to be a fixed 8-pin connector. It is unclear to see if the last two pins are on a clip or are physically attached and I question this since the description reads “PCI-E 8 pin” instead of “PCI-E 6+2 pin” as listed for the VX Series which has a different picture of 6 pins with two detached. What is even more confusing is that the TX Series shows the the image used by the VX series for "PCI-E 6+2" but has the caption “PCI-E 8 pin”. I am however interested in what is provided with the HX620 and im just referencing the others to try and asertain consitancy. I would post images and links but the forum wont allow me to do so until i have aquired 5 posts. Sorry to keep asking, I just want to be certain I will be able to use the card and the power supply together out of the box! Thanks for your feedback! |

Re: Do Corsair PSUs have the appropriate connectors for the 9800GX2?
Here is a pic of the connectors on the PCIe connector for the HX series PSUs. I used an EVGA 9800 GX2 briefly this weekend for some testing and benching. This cable worked perfectly. The tab is off center but it would lock in and secure the plug. You just need to wiggle it a bit when installing.
Also, Nvidia has noted that the recently finalized PCI-SIG specification for the 300w PCIe connectors DOES include the 6+2 pin connectors. So, to accomodate these, Nvidia has reportedly already started widening the slot where the locking tab goes on these cards. |

Re: Do Corsair PSUs have the appropriate connectors for the 9800GX2?
Yellowbeard, Thank you very much, Thats great to hear.
One last question If i may, Will the one cable supply the required power to the card or should i use the 6 pin from one cable and the 6+2 from the other - I wouldnt want to draw too much off of one cable. Thank You Again! |

Re: Do Corsair PSUs have the appropriate connectors for the 9800GX2?
I ran it just fine off of 1 cable. However, I will not be a bad thing to use the 6+2 from one side and the standard 6 pin from the other if you don't mind an extra cable in your case.
