Re: When do you buy a new PSU? Poll 2
The last time I bought a new PSU I was upgrading from a ATI X300 to a nvidia 8800GTS 640MB lol, and I only had a 350W PSU, also I was looking at upgrading the CPU from the 3.0GHz P4 530J to the 3.8GHz P4 670, along with all the other components the old PSU wouldn't have coped at all lol.
I normally try to buy a PSU that will run my rig and allow some upgrading without requiring another PSU. M_Taylor40 |

Re: When do you buy a new PSU? Poll 2
I will only buy a new PSU if my curent one fails. However, saying that if I do happen to do a complete overhaul then I would probably need to buy a new PSU.

Re: When do you buy a new PSU? Poll 2
I hardly upgrade PSUs since I make sure the PSU I buy when building the system is quiet and efficient. Sometimes I'd upgrade a PSU if one or more components need more power, usually graphics cards.

Wot Sim said
Recently upgraded to a HX620 as I wanted a silent PSU. Already had a powerful enough (500W) PSu but it had three fans. I later realsied it had three settings for when the fans kicked in. In any case (no pun intended) I can hardly hear my new PSU. |

Re: When do you buy a new PSU? Poll 2
last time around was due to needing newer connections, this time will be to replace my current hiper psu as it hasn't got the best rap for reliability, either a tx650 or tx750 would do that nicely

Upgrading motherboard, graphics and CPU are normally the main reasons for me.
New builds obviously. PSU's becoming more efficient (important when 4 or 5 can be left on 24/7). Also much cooler and quieter. Connectors also a problem on older units. I think the amount of connectors on some new units is overkill and also the quality of cable used is not as good as the main PSU. Threading cables through a big rig with several hd's, fans etc can be a pain as the cables are very stiff and bulky. I think people would be prepared to pay extra for a modular PSU with very flexible cables and good quality connectors, I dont think they are that bad - its just they could be better!

Re: When do you buy a new PSU? Poll 2
voted for needing more modern connections - but thats in part to upgrading ther components so it would have been valid to say a combination of cpu, mb and gpu, but it wasn't additional power draw that was the issue rather plugging everything in.

Re: When do you buy a new PSU? Poll 2
I voted for quieter, more efficient and only when performing a major overhaul or complete build. My living/entertainment room doubles as my office so noise reduction is very important to me.
My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?
