    £60 psu

A friend and I are designing a new setup, and we are on a fairly tight budget. I found a review of the EVGA Supernova B2 750W on Jonnyguru.com, which gives it an incredible score and costs £66 on amazon. It's a tad over budget, and a power supply is something we are struggling with, as we cannot really find any that are any good for £60.

If necessary we will go with that as it's by far the best we have found for that price so far, but if there are any slightly cheaper ones out there that are high quality for the price, then we will be able to nab it.

    Any help would be appreciated.

The wattage we are looking for is anything between 650-750.

According to the Cooler Master power supply calculator, I need 451W minimum.

Ignore everything you've seen in a calculator. What wattage do you actually need? I recommend you start a 'review my build' thread listing all your components if you need help.

    Re: £60 psu

This is a PSU Cat found & recommended in a previous thread - if 550W is sufficient for your needs, it looks like a good deal to me:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Zalman-ZM550...pr_product_top

Just make sure they send you the right PSU, some people got sent a different model to the advertised one! (read the reviews on Amazon).

I've not had first hand experience I'm afraid, so I couldn't tell you. I did a Google search & found an unhappy customer over at Tomshardware Forum who was having trouble getting any after-sales support. Of course you'd have a years warranty with the retailer, but after that I don't know. It's not a good sign if their website doesn't mention details of their warranty though.

    Re: £60 psu

The warranty is 5 years on the Zalman. The OEM is Enhance Electronics but I can't find a single review on it which would put me off. I have had problems with Zalman's non-existant support for one of their fan controllers. They just don't ever get back to you.

Have you seen the Superflower Units that OCUK are selling? They have the Superflower Golden Green HX550w at £50 or if you want fully modular they have the Leadex Gold 650w for £68. Warranty is 5 years and the whole warranty is with OCUK. In case you have never heard of them they are one of the best oem's in the world and are high quality units. They also make the EVGA Supernova G2 and P2 units which EVGA must have a lot of faith in because they come with a whopping 10 year warranty.

Cooler Master GM series is also worth considering, IMO.

Had any experience with the Cooler Master GM, or have you heard good things?

The EVGA Supernova 650W G1 had a seller a couple of days ago selling it for 63 quid however they ran out of stock. Check amazon from time to time until you find something else who knows they might restock by then.

That does look like a good buy - made by FSP, & a 5 year warranty too

Just to be clear, most retailers don't offer any "warranty" at all, though it's not unusual for them to facilitate a manufacturer warranty, which is often one-year.

Some retailers do offer their own warranty, though it tends to be the exception not the rule. And either way, the warranty includes and excludes whatever the warranty offer says it does. Some might offer a very limited, 5-year warranty, while others offer an extremely comprehensive 3-month warranty, up to and including damage by your dog chewing the item.

What retailers MUST provide is a consumer's statutory rights. But that isn't for one year. In England & Wales, it's 7 years. In Scotland, it's similar but a bit different. But the coverage ONLY covers you for faults inherent in the goods at time of purchase, and for 6 months, that's automatic unless the seller can prove it to not be the case, but after which, the buter has to PROVE the fault's inherent for those most of those rights to apply.

Many retailers will deal with things for one year, but it's something of a misnomer to call it a warranty unless, as some do, the explicitly offer a 12-month warranty in their T&C's. Some do, and if so, it's enforceable, but it will depend on which retailer you use.

    Re: £60 psu

Hi Saracen, just one small correction

In England and Wales you get up to 6 years from time of purchase to make a claim that the goods you bought were inherently faulty, not 7. In Scotland it's more interesting, as it's actually 5 years but what a lot of people don't realise is this is from the time the fault is discovered, not the purchase itself, so could potentially be longer than 6 years.

But yes, for up to 6 months it's up to the retailer to prove the goods are not faulty, not for you to prove they are. After 6 months the onus reverses, as you rightly point out.
I'm not insane. My mother had me tested.
