Help please

I just bought a new graphics card, an ATI x1950 pro. (my old radeon 9600 was starting to show its age.

Problem is when I boot the system it simply dies. Sometimes I get to the desktop and I've managed to instal all the drivers etc. But as soon as I ask it to do anything strenuous it simply cuts out.

I'm thinking it might be something to do with the crappy power supply I have its a Qtec 550wp

I have 2 DVD's and a Cd player and of course the floppy running, with a sound card

Am I right, do I need a new power supply?

That sounds logical. Can you put the 9600 back in temporarily to check?

Well I'm not a sherlock Holmes but I would speculate that it's either your card or PSU that's causing you problems. Anway a good make PSU is always a good investment, so it's not money down the drain if you bought one.

I've put the old Radeon back in and it works fine with no problems.

I've also tried installing the 1950 but disconnecting all the DVD's etc, but it still won't work. I heard these card pull as much as 100w of power and my power supply can dip as low as 350w. So it does sound logical that its the PSU

It would be nice to be able to install the 1950 in someone elses computer to see if its the card.

Power supply is the logical conclusion and as noted by excalibur2, you could probably do with better PSU, and especially using that card. If you don't plan to go Crossfire, the HX520 is plenty of power. If you do plan to go Crossfire or want a more powerful unit for future use, the HX620 is best.

I only glanced but I see that info is about 8 months old so I would expect it to be resolved now. Also, is that issue limited to Sapphire or all ATI cards of that same model?

Dunno, but I'm interested because the X1950 is on my list for my upgrade, but I've just bought the Corsair 520, so it's going to be the card if I have problems.

BTW you are reading the date in American format
