V+ HD Box - strange noises

    Hi,

When I got Tivo in, I got them to move the V+ box upstairs, and it works fine. The only issue is, at random times it seems to fire something up, not sure if it's an HD or a fan. Is this normal? It's quite annoying when you're trying to sleep... It's not recording anything, cos we wiped all of the series links off it, and it seems too frequent for firmware updates. It's not in a hot place either, and has no other boxes on top or underneath it...

Re: V+ HD Box - strange noises

What sort of noise? It could be fan or HD. I t is effectively a computer so the hard drive will always be spinning, and there will be computer system activities going on, requiring HD activities (usually a ticking noise as the heads move). It will also be generating heat, so there may be a fan kicking in from time to time. You probably didn't notice them before, with general background noise, but it becomes more notcieable when the house is quiet (and you are trying to get to sleep!)

My Sky+ box does this all the time, just got used to it.

I presume they must get updates or do housekeeping during the off-periods.

It'll probably be the hdd spinning up you'll hear. The box will download stuff here and there and thus will require the hard drive which will mean you'll hear it whirring away which will also mean a fan will come on. With sky it downloads a selection of anytime programmes at various times, usually early in the morning, so I'd assume Virgins on demand is up to a similar thing, is there a way of turning on demand off on virgin?

Re: V+ HD Box - strange noises

hard drive spins up at totally random times. i have found isolating the mounts can help also making sure its not in a unit as that amplifies the sound. i asked a vm engineer and he said there all noisy and he took his hard drive out, mounted it in a isolated caddy and ran cables back in to shut up the one in his bedroom.

Re: V+ HD Box - strange noises

Right. I was awake long enough last night to work out that it seems to be each hour, on the hour. I don't know if this means it's polling rather than being reactive, but it seems a bit daft. And it's true, I probably didn't notice it before cos it was in the lounge, with all the other assorted noises going on...

Saying that, it'a been nearly 2 years since we got the Tivo, and it's taken a bout of insomnia for me to notice, and for it to grind my gears, so I guess I should just chill out...

Re: V+ HD Box - strange noises

I've had a few of these boxes and unfortunately they have all made the same distracting noise, I believe it's the HDD spinning up. I have a Virgin Tivo in another room which is silent, I wish all the boxes were Tivos.

Re: V+ HD Box - strange noises

Strange hearing that. Before going all Tivo, we had a V+ HD box, and I never noticed anything out of the ordinary, aside from the occasional 'tick' every few hours. Maybe some are louder than others?

EDIT: And I've just noticed I "necroed" this thread. Not a very active forum, this one.
