IPCC busted lying again (global warming)

    [url=http://www.dailytech.com/Noted+Sea+Level+Expert+Accuses+IPCC+of+Falsifying+Data/article9978.htm[/url]

The IPCC, source of pretty much every bit of data that suggests the earth is warming up because of man seems to have been busted lying again

Governments make policy based on what this bunch of self serving knobs produce.
Every single temperature rise this bunch of cowboys has predicted has not happened with them being over 300% out at times.
    Yet people still believe them.
They have a history of falsifying data to support man made global warming.
I'm not getting involved in a discussion on this, since they always end up circular. Look into the IPCC's history and make your own minds up.

not that the daily tech link isn't a good read.

    is it the right link?

I'm not a "global warming denier" so I can justify driving around in a 4*4 (I ride a bike which is far more environmentally friendly than almost all cars), but the "facts" that keep being presented just don't add up in my mind.

I also had a uni lecturer recently explain to me with CO2 is one of the worst examples that can be used to back up the theory, and its been chosen because its easy to pitch to people / press to understand. How true that is, I don't know, but he was adamant about it and that chemicals like methane from the cattle we raise is never questioned.

I find Milankovitch cycles - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia far more interesting, but something that is never mentioned on the news.

It also seems that in any area of science questioning results is considered good, yet do the same with global warming and you'll get lynched by people.

Like Agent, i'm not a climate change denier, but i am sceptical of the claims being made about by many in the "climate change industry".

Yes CO2 is a factor, Methane is a huge contributer too.

I'm far more woried about the limited natural resources we have on this lump of rock. For me thats the main reason for investigating alternative fuels, reducing our energy consumption, reducing our waste production and recycling more.

I'm more worried about the nock on effect of the anti CO2 brigade. Why is it only CO2 thats a problem, its ok now for people to poson a lake, so long as they don't burn any coal whilst doing so?

Also the CO2 lobby don't seam too fussed the obvious quick solution to their complaints is genocide.

To a degree Funkstar, I think almost every problem that's related to this can boil down to one thing: There is too many people on the planet, and it shows no signs of slowing to a sustainable rate.

We can change our lifestyle to a degree to help with the situation, but according to World population - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia , over the period of 1900-2000 the population on Earth has gone up by over 3 times. Thats huge.

China is exploding population wise. When the cheap goods start to slow from there, we will wonder what hit us.

Radiohead backs WW2-style austerity program | The Register

    Also an interesting read.

For example: from next month, mercury is being reintroduced into the British home. Mercury-based light bulbs will be compulsory within three years: but these CFLs (compact fluorescent light bulbs) are not only more expensive than traditional light bulbs, but pose all kinds of safety problems regarding their disposal. Break one, and you have a small biohazard in your kitchen.
That seems like a step backwards to me? I mean this stuff is highly toxic and needs the proper equipment to clean up if spilt.

Yeah I've heard reports of this. It's a scary prospect really.

Global warming or climate change is debatable, the worlds limited natural resources is not up for debate.

agent mate, that is sheer rubbish I read the same scare story on digg a year ago and looked into it. The amount of mercury in a CFL in minute and poses no serious health hazard if you break one, simply open the window for a bit. Job done. I might add that I broke one of these a few months back, didn't even open a window as its a large room and I am perfectly fine. The fact is that more mercury (and uranium and thorium) is released in the coal burnt to provide the additional electricity required to run the traditional bulb.

Fossil fuel power plant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

'Trace amounts of mercury exist in coal and other fossil fuels.[10] When these fuels burn, toxic mercury is released which accumulates in food chains and is especially harmful to aquatic ecosystems. According to the United States Department of Energy, the worldwide emission of mercury from both natural and human sources was 5,500 tons in 1995, [10] of which coal-fired plants in the USA release an estimated 48 tons annually.[10] The Environmental Working Group (a privately funded environmental advocacy organization) alleges that coal-fired power plants are the largest emitters of mercury in the USA.[11]'

To be honest, I am not sure about climate change and the IPCC however I fear that is exactly the kind of state the oil companies and GW deniers want. They want to introduce doubt into a debate in which the majority of scientists seem to have a consensus of opinion that GW is real. So to sum up, I dunno, but I say that its better to be safe than sorry and all the pollution we create can't be good for us anyway so lets stop it.

I wasn't trying to imply that I'm any sort of expert in the field when it comes to Mercury, just that we were taught not to mess with the stuff and that it was an interesting read

Safety issue aside, Isn't it a git to dispose / process out of used devices ?

I think the question should be, is it more difficult to process than the Mercury currently pumped out into the atmosphere?

The answer has to be most certainly, no.

Re: IPCC busted lying again (global warming)

Personally I think that climate change has a much simpler cause. There's more people using more energy and as any PC owner knows, a vast amount of energy is liberated as waste heat.

Therefore the atmosphere is slowly being heated up faster than it can radiate the heat away and over time leads to "global warming".

Now all I need is a silly sized government budget and a lot of data and I'm set for the next 20 years

Heck, I'm old enough to remember how 35 years ago it was "scientifically proved" that we were entering the New Ice Age, and therefore we need lots and lots of money for research.
Luckily modern governments have looked into the Tarot Cards and Crystal Balls to determine that they need to tax the people more to prevent the tragedy of Government Spending getting too low.

In fact we are on the edge of the next ice age if you look at the climate data of the last few billion years. Global warming could in fact be postponing the next ice ace or possibly trigger it according to some of the articles I have read.
