Re: The state of music
I remember having the exact same conversation with some of my friends about 6 or 7 years ago.
I used to listen to a fair bit of Radio 1, but gave up around that time, convinced that their playlist was a lot smaller than it used to be (plus I find most of the current DJs incredibly tedious). I So if you are having the same thoughts now, then it's got to be one two things 1) Radio 1 has got even narrower in their playlist (ye gods!) 2) We're just all getting old As others have said, there's still plenty of decent music around, you just need to cast the net a bit wider. 6music is good, but being DAB / online I don't listen to it anywhere near as much as I would like. Most of my music discoveries these days come from either last.fm or recomendations on forums. Coldcut are classed as unknowns these days? dear god... |

I've mainly found the last few weeks I'm listening to a hell of a lot of mash up's, various styles all mixed together, old and new giving tracks a very different feel. |

I'm going (more for the atmosphere and to say I've done it!) mainly to see my faves.... Tiesto, Van Buuren, Van Doorn, A&B, Ferry etc Plenty there to keep me occupied! Shame Halliwell has pulled out this year too. |

Re: The state of music
Playing devils advocate thou, Mark Ronson was a headliner at creamfields, and kinda the first act on the main stage, so a warm up i guess.
I didn't want to see him, but the pendulum tent wasn't open yet, and a mate i was with did. He was actually quite good, even for a very much dance festival thing like cream feilds. I think the trick was that whilst he was on the main stage, he was on at 1pm whilst it was still mid day sun level, so everyone was just kinda relaxing anyway. |

Re: The state of music
To the uneducated masses they can be classed as unknowns. That's only because they've not been stuck on a album like OMG NOW thats what I call a compilation volume 654 part 3.
Anyway, I'll shut up now and go back to listening to my autobots and rogue element mixes ![]() |

Re: The state of music
Last time I went to CF they had Gnarles Barclay on the main stage... except he didn't show up. The only act I saw on that stage was the prodigy, but it was gooooood.
Tigs, I have to make a choice this year. Its either festivals or Ibiza, and since I already persuaded my missus that I was going again, I am deffo going. Next year when I run out of means to bribe her into accepting it without too much whingeing Il probably just do festivals. |

Re: The state of music
Even Ibiza is going a bit funny now though.
It's getting invaded by Rock Bands galore and their tight jeans wearing, emo style crowd. I bet the beach would be a barrel of laughs at sunrise watching all the emo's cry about how nature is beautiful ![]() |

Re: The state of music
I listened to 6 music this morning a bit and it was good i have to admit, but its just inconvenient because i don't have a dab radio, although just streaming it now and chromeo is on
. There is lots of good music out there, i'm just finding it hard to find, but i'm looking in the wrong places i reckon. I just wish they'd take a risk more on bbc and play less mainstream tripe during the day./me wanders off to listen to old essential mixes |

Re: The state of music
I think reality tv shows like x-factor have had a negative effect on british music scene.
Name me 3 winners of x-factor who Mr Cowell made big and name 3 songs of thiers? Leona.. and.. I can't remember any of the others. Simon Cowell has made no stars, it's just crap. People trying to be famous for being famous. |

Re: The state of music
Grade 7 Paino actual, doing Diploma level stuff... been playing 7 1/2 years, and I'm still not out of my teens. Grade 5 organ - distinction. Working on diploma level stuff again, simply because I thought it sounded good. Need to do my Grade 6/7/8 organ and 8 on piano to get my UCAS though. They don't like you getting 2 or 3 diplomas from all over the place, because walking into university with 15 letters or so after your name BEFORE your degree scares people. Yes, I know I'm bragging... but having just got my results from my Organ exam, and my auditions on Wednesday - music school auditions, Purcell School of Music - I need a quick confidence boost to remind myself just exactly what I've managed to do. Not that I'm likely to manage to get 3 diplomas, but I can see myself getting 2 in the next few years.... and maybe a place at a college of music somewhere as well... I listen to some choir stuff as well, for same reason as above. Don't like solo singing (on my own) but recently had to sing Raphael from Haydn's Creation for a rehearsal where the actual soloist didn't turn up... Fun, but hard ![]() I always do things backwards, because that's what I was told to do when learning new stuff... start at the end and work your way backwards. Life is a new thing to me still ![]() |

Re: The state of music
The state of music now, hmm...
Well, I shall include my favourite little rant first of all. Bloody emos have managed to make the public at large confuse circling with moshing. One involves deliberately violent motion towards others, the other a mutual exchange of space via random flailing of limbs (which may injure, but is not intended to). Clubs and gigs have changed a lot since the original age of rock in the 60's and 70's. I think the problem we have with music here in Britain can be best summed up with how much better the continent is. One needs only to look at the line-up for this year's Rock Im Park to realise how awful British tastes have become (or rather, have been manipulated to become). Oh, if only I spoke more german and they still had tickets... |
