What would you do?
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/rtrs/200807...o-81f3b62.html
The story itself has me torn, one the one hand the child in question is a murderer, someone who deliberately set out to kill other human beings. On the other hand, at 15 did he really understand what it meant? Was he bullied into doing it by others? What would you do if you were the Canadian Prime Minster, press for the child to come home? Push for full punishment?? |

Re: What would you do?
its a tricky one, made harder by the total lack of regular legal process he is subjected too.
It depends also on how he's been treated, if they've gone for the really nasty things, in his cell leaving pictures of the dead corpses he can't remove etc. (i can't find the link that suggested that now). |

Re: What would you do?
The murder needs to go through proper legal process and be locked up for a long time and rehabilitated. Not tortured in Guantanamo bay.

Re: What would you do?
Yes at 15 - I sure as hell knew right from wrong.
Don't give me that liberal bleeding heart story about how you do not know right from wrong until a certain age. |

See, I think this is a big problem in the world today: justice takes a backseat...a lot of people seem more concerned with the criminal's feelings, emotions, and finding out why did such a thing (then saying it wasn't actually their fault for whatever sob reason) rather than seeing justice served. It's bull-- well, you know. What about the victims and the loved ones they left behind? I have no sympathy for this lad; he sure didn't about anyone else. Is this a tad harsh? Maybe...yet, it sure seems to be working. I'd wager that if he got out, he wouldn't do it again after this. But I don't believe he deserves to be let out for a long, long time. It sounds like justice to me! |

Re: What would you do?
He's a (quoting report) "soldier." If he's a soldier then he deserves to be treated as one.
However, I feel that Guantanamo is far to extreme for anyone to be sent there, and should be raided, blown up and closed down. It's not a prison. It's a torture facility. Yes, imprison people, but why should we sactioning torture? |

Re: What would you do?
if anyone commits a crime, they should be punished whatever age they are. For someone so young to commit a crime, that shows their terrible upbringing. They need to be in a controlled environment where they can learn how to be a member of society. Too many young people are killing each other today!
How can anyone not know that murder is wrong no matter what age they are and of sane mind!! |

Re: What would you do?
What on Earth was a 15 year old Canadian doing fighting in Afghanistan in the first place? How did he get there? Under whose authority/accompaniment? I agree that the Bay is no civilised place by any stretch of the imagination, but I still believe this lad should face a full trial of his actions.
I also believe though, that a secret closed military 'court' run by the Americans isn't the place to do it. |

Re: What would you do?
Maybe, as rainmaker said, we shouldn't be concentrating on the consequences of his actions, but how those actions actually happened.
However, I'm sure that any agency set up to investigate will recieve a visit from at least one world power to stop them... or when the findings don't support the views they want, the world powers will close it down then before publication of the report. |
