    Gigbyte Brix Nano PC

    Can someone just confirm I'm ordering the correct interface mSATA and RAM to go with the Gigabyte Brix?

    Here's the components

    2x RAM
    http://www.cclonline.com/product/109...emory/RAM0961/

    Gigbyte Brix barebones:
    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/543320

    mSSD:
    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/504791

    Want to keep this is cheap as possible (will be mounted to the back of the TV)

    I think 4Gb RAM and a 60Gb drive will be sufficient for my needs.

    Any suggestions for cheaper alternatives welcome

    Total cost comes to £200.75 inc. delivery at present.

    Thats impressively cheap for a nicely specced little machine. Tempted to get one for the OH who's after a desktop to replace her laptop. If you could provide feedback on the WIFI reception that would be great.

    Should you feel the need you could double the size of the SSD for an extra £20 or so, e.g.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Crucial-CT12...ords=msata+ssd

    Ever so slightly cheaper RAM:

    Yeah thanks for those suggestions malfunction think I'll go with that and mentally think of it as getting a capacity boost for £15, also a 120Gb drive is much more useful for potential future builds

    Re: Gigbyte Brix Nano PC

    Sorry I'm a bit late, but personally I think I would of opted for the slightly more beefy intel DC3217BY
    http://www.ebuyer.com/409027-mb-boxd...ox-boxdc3217by
    For £10 more
    Although there's no ethenet and you'd also need to get a wireless card for it eg http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=NW-012-IN you can probably find a cheaper compatible card, but overall I've found the realtek wireless can be a bit patchy when the intel centrino is solid.
    But overall £30 more for the better i3 cpu, a slightly better chipset and better wireless

    Re: Gigbyte Brix Nano PC

    Pob I did a comparison between the Intel i3 and the Celeron:

    http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i...-Celeron-1037U

    As you can see the results suggest there's very little between them, except the integrated graphics is ~10-15% faster on the i3.

    Re: Gigbyte Brix Nano PC

    Sorry I only did a quick look at the passmark score
    I'm never too sure on CPUboss, their scoring seems rather board, it would be better if they showed all the scoring number they used on that one page.

    Look at the actual numbers
    GeekBench (32-bit)
    1037u = 2600
    3217u = 2887
    GeekBench 64bit
    1037u = 2600
    3217u = 4652
    Passmark
    1037u = 1738
    3217u = 2273
    Passmark single core
    1037u = 943
    3217u = 879

    Granted there's not a lot in them, mainly the i3 has some more cache and hyperthreading, on the graphics front it's got the HD 4000 (16stream) over the celeron HD 2500 (6stream) which might sound good but at these low levels it's not that major.
    Looks like 64bit and multi threading where the i3 pulls ahead, so not really that important for basic pc usage, it is still a step up, just not a large one.
    Actually I think the lack of networking on that intel unit is a bigger let down.

    Please let use know how you get on with it

    Re: Gigbyte Brix Nano PC

    My thoughts too RE networking. This will occasionally be used for LAN gaming (nothing heavy, just stuff like Company of Heroes at worst) so the inclusion of a physical port was a major plus for me for a smooth set-up when doing this (hate using wireless at LAN at it just causes an extra layer of headaches!). Also note I paid £117 for the Gigabyte, it's since gone up to £129.

    I've 'build' the machine (i.e. unscrew the back plate and installed the hard drive and ram ) which took about 5 minutes if I'm generous! The build quality is second to none. I'll post a review and some pictures when it's all set-up.

    Not that I'm aware of, they're viewed sold as a bare bones setup for you to add your own OS / RAM / Hard drive.

    Looks definitely interesting.
    Wonder how does it compare at everyday use vs cheapest home build dual/quad machines (typically with APU and such).

    Re: Gigbyte Brix Nano PC

    I think this form factor is definitely the way forward, mounted to the back of a monitor for basic PC set-ups. It's just so portable. Phone's are typically powerful enough these days to do the basics of a full PC set-up so the extra space something like this provides allows for even more competent power. The ability to upgrade is obviously reduced, but at least there is some scope (and it's so quick and easy!) I also like the fact you can upgrade the PC / monitor independently instead of these all in one solutions. So to summarise it's not all good, but the benefits definitely outweigh the negatives for a general purpose computing device with light gaming potential.
