Should be great fun to OC. If not then I can't see a huge advantage.

AFAIK x58 boards are almost impossible to get cheap. Someone else should advise though.

I think you are right about the boards, after closer inspection on the ones I saw on ebay going for £30 odd quid, they actually had a fault of some kind! arrrg. The other ones are going for £80-100+

Do you know what form factor the motherboards in a rack server are? would it fit in an ATX case..

I'm thinking of stripping a Dell poweredge R710 with an Xeon e5520/16GB ram and sticking ALL the components in a desktop if possible.

if i were you i would spend a bit more on a case. I was considering the 230t but decided on spending a bit more for the nzxt phantom 410.

    Can anyone advise..

I been looking more and more into Xeon CPUs as a cheap temporary upgrade. If I can get a Xeon E5520 for free (its cheaper than my Q6600!) and free memory, then buy a cheap x58 (1366) borad, will this give me a big/small advantage over a Q6600?

It seems to get better Passmark and geekbench scores @ http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Xeon-E...re2-Quad-Q6600
To be honest if I was still on 775 socket I'd just wait until I could afford to jump to 1150, keep the cash you have now towards that rather than spending some of it on a comparitively small upgrade.
