Minimum required to be able to run mostly everything 1080p

Hi building a Steam PC for my living room using Micro ATX form factor parts I don't particularly want to spend a lot but I do want to run most games at 1080p 60FPS high to ultra setting but don't mind the odd occasion going to a minimum of 30FPS and medium quality setting. I would like the setup to be somewhat future proof.

    The spec I'm considering:

    CPU - i5 4690K 3.5Ghz
    GPU - GTX 770 2GB
    RAM - 8GB DDR3

As I'm trying to not spend much (no absolute budget but as little as I can) I need to get the minimum hardware required for my aim (mentioned above) I would like to know if other parts would suffice besides the ones I've listed (for example would an AMD FX 8350 be suitable? is a GTX 770 2GB enough?)

    Thanks

I was playing around this a similar spec earlier today and ended up with the following:

    i5 4690K
MSI Z97i Mobo : I've got its mATX brother and like it.
2x 4GB Ram : has been some good offers recently.
ASUS STRIX 970 : Two reasons for the more expensive card, future proofing (my current 290 won't ultra everything @ 1080) and the fact it runs 100% silent when not gaming.
240GB SSD : Samsung by choice but any of the decent makes that are on offer at the moment.
500W EVGA Bronze : £35 on amazon, not modular, 500W will be fine with the i5 and no OC.
Corsair 250D : Prob my fave small case and can support a H100i if I wanted a AIO solution.

It's not the cheapest build which are you are after but it's what I would save for if going for the gaming HTPC solution

AMD 8 core CPUs aren't too bad at all, although a few games will show their weaknesses, it will also probably be a bit louder...something to consider for the living room (especially if their is a Mrs Smush!)

If noise is a factor, then I would sway towards nVidia for the graphics card. Ultra 1080p does say 970 to me.

The high to ultra high argument is a load of tosh as there is no standard.

Who knows what will come out tomorrow where you need a 750ti for low but sli-ed 980s for medium

Of course but unless you are buying the latest and greatest cards on release at some point you have to use some educated guessing on what is good enough now and what should last some time.

The 900 series of cards came out a good chunk after the next gen consoles, even if really new shiny games come out that beat the **** out of those cards you will still be able to make it look better than a PS4

Re: Minimum required to be able to run mostly everything 1080p

I didn't really want to go with a 970 as I have a main desktop that I will probably do gaming on for things like multiplayer, RTS games and any game where KB and mouse are preferred.
the current spec of that is
    i7 930 2.8 Ghz
    AMD HD5870
    6GB DDR3

which I was going to upgrade the GPU to a 970 (depending on how the AMD 390 turns out) and up RAM to 12GB as I have a triple channel mobo

Initially I had planned to make a super powered HTPC and just move it around office to living room as needed but I couldn't be bothered with the hassle and I really like my desktop Silverstone FT02 case so I don't want to get rid of it.

While the 8350 is a fine CPU (I have one), the choice of uATX motherboards is quite shocking so you will really have your work cut out building a system around it.

Basically all the uATX motherboards are cheap ones with really old chipsets and VRMs that are only 95W so can't run a 120W FX cpu.

I assume to mean mATX when you used uATX? How can that be the case that it doesn't support latest CPUs I've been looking at guides to building SFF computers and they all use FX CPUs or i5s

Just checked and the Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 760G will support fx8370 chips

    http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5A.../HelpDesk_CPU/

Still agree not the best chipsets on it though.

For a truly future proof build, I'd suggest a 970 as your GPU.
