    Gaming Rig refresh

My current build is in my profile to the side ut is basically an 2600k cpu overclocked to 4.6ghz, with 8gb memory, R9 290 GPU and a few SSD's sat in an Antec 1200 Case.

However, I am getting to get a number of different bluescreens errors which are pointing to memory faults and drive errors and the whole system is becoming more unstable. Along with that, a few games are now starting to struggling with a 3 screen eyefinity setup (Elite dangerous is one) so feel like it is time to go for a bit of a refresh on the whole lot.

    Curreny thoughts are

Motherboard : Replace ASrock Z68 with Asus Z710 Pro Gaming
    CPU : Replace 2600k with I7 6700K
    Memory : Replace Corsair DDR3 8gb with 16gb Corsair DDR4
    CPU Cooler : Replace H60 with H100i
Storage : Replace OS Drive Samsung with Samung Evo 850. Keep the OCZ Revo for a games drive and keep the 2tb drives for basic storage.
Graphics : Keep the R9 290x and either add an additional one or add in a 295x2 if I can find one.
PSU : Replace Corsair HX 850W with Corsair AX1200i
Sound : Keeping the Asus Essence STX card but also need onboard for Teamspeak system.
Case : Unsure if 1200 with be able to take theH100i radiator and 295x2 radiators but would like a case no bigger than it and if possible, one with better filters (you have to take the hard drive cages out of th 1200 to clean the filters which is a pita). Happy to take recommendations but would like a clean case with no bright lighting.

Monitors and the rest will remain as they are.

    Re: Gaming Rig refresh

I would say that is a lot of money to spend on a fixing a few niggles for very little gain (with exception of getting a second 290x). Having just perused the 6700K review a few minutes ago and seeing a 2700K frame rates approx. 5% less in games - I was unimpressed.

Though having retired my overclocked 4770K because it would never run 100% stable, I can understand the urge to start afresh.

Perhaps post your problems, with us, here first before you spend nearly £1K upgrading for very little gain.

    Re: Gaming Rig refresh

Its mainly around a few niggles I have with the system, plus the blue screens which are pushing me towards the refresh.

    Niggles :-

    1. The case is a pain to clean with dust and requires to be taken apart to get the filters out. It also doesn't have the required room to fit standard size radiators in the case, without modification. I purchased the case when I have 15 hdd's in a raid array but with those now housed in a unraid server, the requirement for a full tower server is only around the cooling aspect which I am sure that there are better options.

    2. I'm pretty much out of USB ports at the moment so am already looking at decent options to expand those anyway. This motherboard solved that for the moment.
    essence

    3. PCI Slots. I am unable to fix a second gpu into my current motherboard due to the layout of the slots, with the OCZ revo taking a full pcie slot, and my asus essence stx card taking a pcix1 slot (blocking the third pcie x16).

Bluescreens have been on the corrupt page file, issues with the ntfs.sys, memory management and a corrupt profile not (store will not longer open). Pretty sure that most are these are to do with current OS ssd failing but the memory management is been going for a while and even a new motherboard last year didn't help fix that. Seems pointless in buying new memory for the current system if I am going to have to replace it with ddr 4 anyway.

    Cheers
    R

    Re: Gaming Rig refresh

    All reasonable arguments. However:
    - make sure you choose you case carefully. Carefully!
    - lack of free USB ports can be easily remedied by any number of readily available 5.25" bay panels.
    - your chosen motherboard don't suffer from similar PCIe layout issues as you have now?
    - I would've sorted any existing problems before buying new. That way you would know for sure the origin of it - lesser chance to repeat in the new system. But that's me.

    Re: Gaming Rig refresh

The case is going to be intresting to find. more research needed on that.

It looks like more modern motherboards have put a lot more spacing between the various PCIe slots. The one I linked too should be able to fit all the cards in but the revo might be a tad close to the second graphics card.

The currently problems will need investment to try and resolve hence the option to upgrade. Quite happy to reinstall but this would be the 5th+ time that I have done that recently to try and resolve the memory issue and I have a feeling that this amount of disk write might have caused my OS drive issues. Again, its hard to prove that though.
