Here we go, 3 new towers, 1 bundle

Opened one of these last night, panel on the side, chipped paint on the top edge and slightly on outer face too.

I know I didn't buy full systems and to be fair I haven't unpacked them all, no power leads so far, I do have some spare but you would think these would come with some.

All the docs here I got in the boxes say 2 year warranty, all spec. on sales was 3 year warranty.

Now to unwrap some more, was going to leave it until I had time but if there are problems I want to get onto it now.

Best to post on here or email support?

Re: Here we go, 3 new towers, 1 bundle

Been waiting all day for a response via their support contact page.

Power leads, I found 2, sods law the box I looked in had none, so 1 missing but as I've had untold equipment I have spare leads.

Fired up the one I've unpacked, no dvd, it was partly unplugged, no SSD listed in boot menu so now trying to install OS and see if the SSD is listed then.

No, no SSD drive listed to get on with installing onto, only the HDD is listed, guess after the dvd drive I will now power down and check all the leads.

Re: Here we go, 3 new towers, 1 bundle

That was it for the SSD too, cable out.

They have a partition for windows and their test version, should I install over that?

Partitions, I am installing all my software onto the SSD and keeping most of the jobs I work on most on there as it isn't big enough for everything, should I install the new OS on the partition they have set up, should I put all my software into the same or another partition, I've never partioned before, if it go's down it go's down is my ethos, everything is backed up to an external drive, or what to do?

If I install on that partiion it is saying it will back up current copy and call it windows old, I don't want anything left over though, if I don't need it I want it off, re-partition I guess?

Re: Here we go, 3 new towers, 1 bundle

    Hi

A partition is as the same suggests just a way to segregate a disk device into separate logical drives.

From experience you are best to put your software on the same partition as your OS (or the same logical drive) as some software gets upset if it isn't colocated with the OS while others work just fine wherever.

Specifically if you are running any MS product let it install in Program Files on your system drive.

TBH my preferred route is literally to reformat and reinstall Windows as a Windows reinstall over an existing install often inherits any defects in the install if there are any.

Re: Here we go, 3 new towers, 1 bundle

    Hi PCT, Thanks for replying.

Well if I was doing it as I always have I would just install all my software and have all my job files etc on the drive without any partitions.

I was just going to get on as I haven't heard back from them on any of the methods I've used to contact them, I had tried to reformat the SSD to wipe off the partition & test version of Windows that Scan use, no partitions as I never have bothered to do that before, and get installing, it did say though if I format I may lose any settings the manufacturer has put on, recovery files etc but do I need to worry about that?

It's overclocked but that's all in the bios I'm sure, and I'm installing the os myself.

Re: Here we go, 3 new towers, 1 bundle

I just got on with it, installed Win 7, no network driver so I got that off the cd that came with it, all up and running, I can see my SSD but the 1TB HDD has gone walkabout.

Hopefully tech support will get back to me in the morning, too hot and too pee'd off to stay on any longer.

    Hi

Sorry, I was working a bit late and was on my way home when you last posted.

I've been told a Windows reinstall doesn't void the warranty so you should be fine, in my experience recovery partitions rarely work as designed anyway.

Does your HDD appear in the BIOS?

Re: Here we go, 3 new towers, 1 bundle

    That's ok.

I guess the only benefit is if the OS go's down you can just reinstall that, but I wouldn't normally bother and never done me any harm.

Yes the HDD is there in the bios and there in the windows install, just when I go into windows it has gone.

Re: Here we go, 3 new towers, 1 bundle

It won't appear in computer unless it has a partition.

If you right click on Computer and select Manage you should be able to manage the partition on it and assign a drive letter.

Re: Here we go, 3 new towers, 1 bundle

I can see it in management, it says it has a partition in there too, do I just need to give it a drive letter as it doesn't have one, or I do have some !'s in device manager for pci simple communications, for SM bus controller, USB controller, could it be that, as I had to install the driver for the lan to work I guess I need to find the drivers for the other ! too, bit concerned I am not undoing any settings they use for the overclocking, I'm sure I read somewhere you can't use sleep or screensavers as it will affect the overclocking but hell if I can find it now.

Re: Here we go, 3 new towers, 1 bundle

Yep give it a letter and it should then appear in Computer

As regards the other issues you need to install the drivers.

I've got to go into a meeting shortly but I'll be around again this evening so I'll do what I can to help

Re: Here we go, 3 new towers, 1 bundle

That was it PCT, gave it a letter, we were off!

    Thanks for all the advice.

I gave up with waiting for support on here from Scan for other issues, and their support contact page, and went back to Lee who was a star getting us the right systems for what we do, he got back to me straight away and it's all sorted, loaded up and ready to rumble.

Very quick systems compared to what we had, happy so far.

Bit of a longer delivery time but bearable, Mesh I ordered a £2600 system back in 08, ordered in December promised delivery by xmas, it arrived at the end of February, I had my laurel and hardy phrase for them, 'that's another fine Mesh you've gotten me into' all foreigners there as far as I could make out, or couldn't make out should I say, not great support so when they folded I had a look around, Overclockers were recommended to me, but hell if I could spend any money with them, never got back to me on my queries, Lee did and what he said stacked up 100% correct too, good reviews on Scan on the web, glad I went with Scan which is wholly down to Lee really, was getting frustrated with support so he's rescued me there too, unless it's only Lee that works there!!!! Seems like it!!!!

Re: Here we go, 3 new towers, 1 bundle

Glad that's sorted, I think there are too many threads on here and some of them are getting lost.

Yep my last system was built by Mesh, Scan's service has been much better I have to say and they have dealt with things in my case very quickly such as a damaged Windows DVD, Ben has been very helpful.

With Mesh I had to get a motherboard swap out as the ethernet controller chip had failed, after several frustrating calls I turned to their forum where at that time there operated a one man customer service force who got it sorted out for me but alas I gather he is no longer with them which is why I went with Scan and I have to say I've not been disappointed.

As someone who professionally deals with technical queries by telephone and e-mail for a living I can say there are times when the queries sent in via e-mail can end up waiting a while if the volume of calls is quite high as obviously a telephone call takes priority which is no doubt the situation at Scan.

I would say to anyone with an urgent issue to phone in rather than using forums or web forms but be prepared to hold for a while as the technicians are likely to be working with customers to resolve issues.

I am bowled over by the performance of my new system (moved from a Pentium D to a Core i5)

Anyway if you need any more Windows help give me a shout.

Hey Ben, I asked Lee to send you my details and I sent you a pic of the damaged panel too, I think you should get Lee and split him into as many Lee's as you can, he's brilliant, ask him for 100 of whatever he takes and dish them out to everyone else

All systems are now ready to rumble, been running 6 pc's while we work on the big changeover, I can now whittle that down to 4 after 3 days of installing, phew
