    Question Scan 3XS - 3XS Z87 Nanu GTX

    Hi,

I'm thinking of ordering the 3XS Z87 Nanu GTX and changing the Nvidia GTX 770 for the AMD R9 290 (no x) when it becomes available

    - I was just wondering how you guys were finding dealing with the excess heat and noise of the R9's, and how you were finding them to overclock?

    - Would it be worth holding on for a month (plus) and waiting for the non-reference cooler cards to come out?

    - I've also heard stories of variability issues (so called golden samples being given to the press)
-would this be something that you would test for and benchmark prior to dispatch?

    Thanks in advance

It's still early days for the R9 290 and 290X, but they are both noticeably louder and hotter running than the equivalent GeForce parts.

Personally I'd opt for a GeForce now or wait and see what third-party coolers can do to tame the new Radeons.

Either way, we stress test all machines we build for at least 24 hours, so any overclock or variability (if indeed AMD has tried to pull a fast on on the press) would be ironed out and documented before we shipped your PC. Sorry if that sounds vague but we haven't shipped enough R9 cards yet to know what they're really like.

I'll hang fire and see what the third party coolers look like - Thanks for the quick response
