Need to return M2 SSD as not compatible with my motheroard

I bought a Lycom DT-120 PCIe3 to PCIe M.2 Adapter with a Samsung SM951 M2 SSD. I thought since I didn't have an M2 slot on my motherboard that I would still be able to boot from the drive by using a PCI M2 adapter. I checked reviews of the adapter before buying and people seemed to suggest that they could boot from the drive in the adapter. I guess it only works for certain motherboards as it doesn't work for mine.

Could I please return these items for a refund?
