£110 20months old end of life item RMAed for £20+VAT refund?

I have been very pleased with Scan's ability in handling RMAs till recently. I was offered a £20+VAT refund on my 20 months old 7900GS (24months warranty, paid £110 for it) due to it being an end of life item and minus depreaciation in value in terms of usage! Scan failed to realise that I am not trading in a defective card! I am merely claiming the warranty granted with the purchase of my card. I tried to bargain for an upgrade but I was rejected and forced to accept the refund.

I find this very outrageous as £20+VAT can merely buy you the lowest-end graphic card available at the time of writing. I have never in my life experience such an outright rip-off RMA procedure. I hope Scan could look further into this.

    Try buying one.
They are old now and can be had for under £30.

Did you expect the full amount? Its 3-4 year old technology.

Obviously its frustrating but ALL etailers work on these principles and afaik, Scan only offer what they can get from the manufacturer. The warranty wasnt with Scan after the first year.

£20+VAT will buy you the same card from Ebay

Less in the case of the second example.

So as annoying as it is, thats probably about the correct value considering its usage

Re: £110 20months old end of life item RMAed for £20+VAT refund???

Well this is not right though. Manufacturers will then start offering 10 or even 100 years warranty. If the item fails after 10 years, the depreciated value will be £0.50 and 100 years £0.01, this will be an outright abuse of the warranty offered?

I once RMAed a failed end of life HDD (not surprising since HDDs have 5 years warranty), I was given a HDD with a higher capacity in return. I'm not sure if this was just purely luck or it is the norm of the industry to replace end of life items RMAed with a better upgrade.

The warranty wasnt with Scan after the first
Well I know some aren't but the warranty for this item is RTB (Return To Base) for 24 months. For those which aren't covered by scan after 12 months, it is normally stated in the description of the product.

Strange is that manufacturer don't want to repair/swap this card. And scan is not to be blamed, because they don't cover warranty after 1st year but producer of the card.
You not first case of such situation. I always wonder, why buy card with lifetime warranty if after 3 years it will not be repaired, replaced but you will be offered some pennies ??

They already do! (BFG for example).
In most cases after the first year you will need to send it back to the manufacturer though - they will sort you out with another card over a refund. I'd be asking Scan if this has been done first - as if the manufacturer is offering 24months warranty it would be very bad of them not to replace it with an equivalent card.

The HD example you give is the system working well - in most cases they will replace it with the same, or better drive. Its in their best interest to keep the customer happy

Re: £110 20months old end of life item RMAed for £20+VAT refund???

Is this an XFX card by any chance?

It happens a fair bit, the best you hope for is to make a fuss and they may give you an 8600GT like they did for the last guy (which I believe was for a 7900GT).

You shouldn't have to buy a second hand card imo but as others have said this is the way it seems to go.

so ask for the card to be sent back to the manufacturers for repair/replacement and see what you get back in the post.

    FOR END-USERS
If you did not purchase Palit's products directly from us, please contact with your direct vendor for RMA service.
AFAIK, Scan will be the one responsible for the RMA and not Palit. Palit works like some sort of OEM companies. That's why their card is always the cheapest among the rest of the brands if you haven't realise it yet.

I agree with you totally. If eBay is made the benchmark of market price. Then market price of most things would be pretty much lower. A new 7900GS from old stocks will definitely costs more anyway. And lastly, I'm RMAing my card not trading in my card...

I think you can legally send it back to the manufacturers for a repair or replacement but check with trading standards.

Re: £110 20months old end of life item RMAed for £20+VAT refund???

I think the price, seeing as how its a 2 year old card almost, is acceptable in the circumstances. The refund was never going to be like the original cost.

    BUT

I would be asking for a replacement instead. If the replacement isnt available then they should at least give an equivalent of the CARD and not the equivalent of the £20 value.

It is a bit of a fix though i agree.

I agree Ebay shouldn't be the benchmark - It was just to illustrate that its around the price that the card would have dropped to currently.
As I previously said though, I would be asking why/if the manufacturer has been contacted, then if they won't offer an alternative to Scan, contact them yourself and kick up a fuss

To be fair to Scan, the only way they have to get involved now, is to do the shipping to and from the manufacturer.
    Their liability has ended.

we shouldn't really be buying cards if they're gonna be obsolete before their warranty's up should we?
