My 8800GTX needs RMA'ing, Scan please help!

    Hi guys,

Exactly one year ago i bought a scan 8800 gtx and corsair hx520 psu. In the last 4 weeks i have been getting problems with my graphics card; it is whining on shutdown. Its a really high pitched squeal/whine, like the sound you get when both pci-e power connectors are not connected to the graphics card. Both pci-e connectors are connected properly all the time. Coupled with this; i am now getting intermittent problems when the graphics card is displaying nothing on screen; not even at post when turning the computer on. Windows loads as normal, there are no error bleeps, but the display shows nothing on screen, just a black picture. I have read around the web and it looks like the card is on its way out; strange as i have not used it much in the last year and it has never been overclocked. i have tested it in other systems and its still not working properly. Looks like a problem with resistors on the card.

Scan, i would like to RMA it, and its been exactly one year since purchase. I have only had time this weekend to write about it, i have been to busy with work commitments to get it sorted. [Invoice number removed - Lee @ SCAN]

Please could you look into it! I would really appreciate any help you can give, and help with RMA'ing

    Many thanks guys.

    Regards.

you are probably better sorting an RMA out over the phone TBH matey, give them a ring in the morning (if you have time) and sort it out then, as they will probably want to ask questions.

Yeah mate think i will, luckily (or unluckily!) working nights this week, have left them a message through their online system too. i have a feeling i might be out of luck as it was purchased a year ago exactly, and warranty is usually for a year...guess i will see what they say. please scan dont let me down, you havent in the past!!

    If you haven't already logged this with the returns department then either log the issue via phone, or alternatively use the Online Query system to report the issue with the card and this can be seen at the following link ;

Re: My 8800GTX needs RMA'ing, Scan please help!

Well im in a state of shock actually, im not able to RMA it as the warranty is two days out of date, so i basically missed the boat by a day (scan is closed on sunday)...
Lee or any other Scan staff, is there really nothing i can do? The problem did start about a month ago but now its a lot worse. Please tell me you can wave your magic wand and help me get this RMA'd...i spent £290 on this card a year ago and now its worth next to nothing. To say i am disappointed is a HUGE understatement, i feel physically sick

I had a problem with a PSU once and i managed to get a replacement with the company even tho it was out of warranty by a few days.

Re: My 8800GTX needs RMA'ing, Scan please help!

Have been searching the net, and stumbled across this:

    http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=103318

the guy selling this card says scan gives a 2 year warranty with this card. Is he lying or is there infact a 2 year warranty? He seems pretty sure about it.

If any of the scan guys can get back to me id appreciate it.

Scan is handeling my motherboard RMA now, and I must say i'm very impressed so far. To be fair to scan if they dont do you an RMA then it will teach you the lesson of buying products with lifetime warrantys i.e. EVGA and others. Hope you get it sorted man.

And about the sick thing I understand, when my motherboard broke I had that exact feeling its like a sickly pain in your stomach

Re: My 8800GTX needs RMA'ing, Scan please help!

I don't think they'll RMA it. Did it come in a box or in bubble wrap as an OEM product? Unless you've got a saved page of the warranty details when you bought it the warranty is 1 year as it seems to be an OEM product you say. Like Bartman said it'll teach you a lesson for getting an OEM product. Makes that £10 or £30 difference between retail cards worthwhile now eh? 8800's are going for £100 or less on eBay so if you want a replacement you'll have to be looking there or saving up a bit more to buy a new one from Scan.

I know Scans service is top notch normally, which is why i have faith in getting this sorted ; i guess i wont buy OEM on something so expensive next time, just feels like i blew 300 big ones for nothing. It was literally a case of 24 hours and i would have been ok, i just hope their goodwill stretches a little bit further. and i need to know whether this warranty is 2 years! i guess im just unlucky

Re: My 8800GTX needs RMA'ing, Scan please help!

    Hi Naan_H,

You'll need to double-check this, but consumers have a lot of rights when it comes to faulty goods, regardless of warranties with a specified length. You know John Lewis advertise a "free 5 year guarantee" with their TVs? If anything goes wrong within SIX years, you can go back to JL to get them to repair or replace the TV (at their discretion). The same principal applies to practically anything you buy from a trader in the UK. (Which is why extended warranties - a la Currys - are a total con.)

    Best place(s) to start? Here:
    http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/index/...hings_go_wrong
    http://www.consumerdirect.gov.uk/
    http://www.dti.gov.uk/consumers/buyi.../page8599.html

As much as I think Scan have great service (I built my PC exclusively from parts I bought from them), I go absolutely nuts when a retailer - any retailer - tries to pull a fast one.

Now I may be wrong, given that this is an "OEM" product, but as it was sold to a consumer (you), I think you will be fine. If Scan refuses to help you, go to Trading Standards, or call Consumer Direct...However, I would stress that you should try and explore every avenue with Scan - including moving up the Customer Service hierarchy - before you go to Trading Standards...and (from someone that worked in customer service for many years), always keep it polite and level-headed - you'll get much further.

    Good luck!

    s75

Scorchio, as has already been stated above, it seems the product was OEM, which as far as am aware is only covered by 1 year warranty, so getting trading standards involved would be useless, as full the comment about pulling a fast one, I think that is wide of the mark as well, again going back to it appearing to be an OEM product.
