    Re: OCZ Vertex Series SSD

Well i got the 60gb up and running but unfortunatley my ageing 680i mobo seems to be holding me back somewhat. Played around with sata drivers but still disappointing write speeds.

Been advised over on OCZ forum that a p45 or x58 mobo for the ICH10R southbridge is the best bet to get best perf out of these drives.

Now pondering...... just get £120 p45, for no real benefit system apart from hopefully increased write speeds,
    or... spend £600 and go i7 ?

    Just a side note.
It has been confirmed on the OCZ forum that the 30gb & 60gb come with the same 64mb cache as the 120 & 250gb versions

    Re: OCZ Vertex Series SSD

I would definitely opt for P45, its far the lesser of 2 evils

on one hand you're not really gaining much performance for £120 cost with the P45 route

but on the other you are increasing cpu performance but certainly NOT £600 worth of extra performance.

edit- after looking at a few more Vertex benches I'm really not particularly impressed with the small file writes
    http://img.techpowerup.org/090310/AT...GB-aligned.jpg
that is my Samsung SLC 64GB drive (I snagged cheaply), this uses a Samsung controller with 32MB cache.
Granted Vertex has a huge read advantage but the small writes are disappointing (I'm looking at other people's ATTO benches too), plus this SLC SSD I have is based on quite old tech about 12-18months at least.

You could always buy a proper hardware raid controller Vroooom! ..

I notice that these are out of Stock on Scan (Item overdue since 11 March 2009).
Other retailers seem to have them in stock: Play, SpecialTech but I want one from Scan

Can anyone at Scan comment on when they are likely to come in?

    Thanks

    Re: OCZ Vertex Series SSD

Definitely go the hardware RAID controller route, be prepared to spend a fair but though to outperform your onboard RAID (it's usually pretty good). The benefit is that you can obviously take the controller with you as you purchase new boards, and not have to worry about how good the onboard raid is on future boards you buy (or even if it has any). On my X38 board I'm getting pretty acceptable performance using onbard RAID, I'll get some figures together and post using ATTO bench.

    Re: OCZ Vertex Series SSD

NEW FW 1199 IS OUT AND SPEEDS HAVE GONE THROUGH THE ROOF - EVEN WITH MY 680i MOBO

OCZ have released a new FW for the vertex drives - v1199.

I have flashed my 60GB with this and the results are mind boggling.

So as you can see, my intial reports a few posts up about these not working well on old chipsets eg 680i are not exactly correct.
Things is i've already gone and ordered a new P45 mobo should I cancel it
(I've been advised that those running raid can hit reads of 450mbps + so in this case a p45 or x58 with the ICH10R is prefferable - single users like me it doesn't really matter)

    Just another note.
I received my 30gb today finally and it already had the new 1199 FW on it = Same great performance.

I'd cancel it, but that's just me ..I'd get a HW raid controller should help them go insanely fast. Especially when raided. The best thing about a decent raid controller is that you can take it with you next time you upgrade. I have my eye on an AMCC/3WARE 9690 4 port raid controller it is quite pricey and Scan dont sell it (Scan any chance of stocking this one? )

Span have it in stock for £264.50 (includes VAT), I won't link the URL as that would be rude in a Scan forum but you can find it using this span code: IC3e9694ib

Btw. Found a review here: http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.ph...1&limitstart=6
They have a higher spec test machine and they get just shy of 250MB/sec read, would love to see that on the new firmware version.

Can anyone at scan confirm with OCZ when the 60GB Vertex will be back in stock? I want one!
